Amsterdam - 4 days
Route A - Ouderkerk aan de Amstel - 24 or 28 kmYou can cycle this short route on the day you arrive. Cycle along the Amstel to the picturesque old village of Oudekerk aan de Amstel. The famous painter Rembrandt loved to walk along the river banks here, and made many drawings and etchings of Amstelland. Cycle back to Amsterdam on the other side of the river past the country villas built by wealthy residents of Amsterdam in the 17th and 18th centuries. Route B - Broek in Waterland - 49 or 55 kmCycle through the city centre to the IJ. Behind Central Station, take a ferry across this former estuary. On the other side of the IJ, you will leave the city and arrive in Waterland, with its peat meadows rich in bird life, ancient canals and watercourses. Cycle through the villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam, which were once on the shores of the Zuiderzee, to Broek in Waterland. All the houses in this beautiful village are timber-framed due to the weak sub-soil, and are mostly painted in pastel colours. Cycle back into Amsterdam along the Noordhollands Kanaal. This route will take you back to your hotel, passing old neighbourhoods and a host of historic buildings on the way. Route C - Abcoude, Weesp and Muiden - 54 or 58 kmCycle along the banks of the rivers Amstel and Waver through the magnificent peat polder to reach the fortified town of Weesp. Follow the meandering river Vecht until you arrive in Muiden, where you can also see the mediaeval castle of Muiderslot. Following the banks of the IJmeer (which used to be the Zuiderzee) cycle to IJburg, the newest district of Amsterdam, which is built on artificial islands. Cross the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal to cycle back into the city centre though architecturally interesting late 19th century neighbourhoods.Route D - Haarlem - 50 kmYou cycle to Haarlem via parks and the harbor area of Amsterdam. The historic city center of Haarlem, which is surrounded by canals, is characterized by many streets and monuments from the 16th to 19th centuries. You will cycle back to Amsterdam along the Nieuwe Meer.Route E Rondrit naar de Zaanstreek 49 kmYou cross the IJ by ferry. You will cycle through the nature and recreation area 't Twiske to the Zaan region with its traditional houses and many windmills. In the open-air attraction Zaanse Schans, you can visit several museums, windmills still running, old Dutch crafts and Zaanse houses.
