Dutch pride

The list of charming towns seems endless. Add to that the many cycling paths, the water views, and the holiday feeling you experience everywhere, and you reach one conclusion: I’m off! But to the former Zuiderzee, that is. From Huizen, you set off toward Amsterdam.

Out on the water

After the famous canals and the ferry across the IJ, you’ll visit Volendam, Edam, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen with, of course, a stop at the Zuiderzee Museum. Then it’s back on the water, crossing the IJsselmeer to the Frisian towns of Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Lemmer, and the stunning Weerribben nature reserve. Via Giethoorn, Kampen, the beautiful Elburg, and Nunspeet, you return to Huizen.

Time stands still here

In the era of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the warehouses in Enkhuizen were filled to the brim with spices, especially pepper. That was what traders were after: the gold of the 17th century. In the attic of the Peperhuis, now part of the Zuiderzee Museum, the scent still lingers as it did centuries ago, pepper and cinnamon. Time also seems to stand still in the open-air section of the Zuiderzee Museum (entrance at Wierdijk 17), where actors bring the early years of the last century back to life.

Hilarious Giethoorn

Packed like sardines in a tin... You cycle along the path beside the intimate canals in Giethoorn with amusement. On the water, a swarm of tourists hilariously zoom in every direction with their rented boats. Then comes a loud cheer from a tour boat: “Woohoo!” About twenty foreign visitors admire your steering skills on the super-narrow bike path. Waving enthusiastically, they snap photos and videos with their cameras and smartphones. After all, this is such a quintessential Dutch scene that they just have to capture it.

Dutch Souvenirs

The charm of the past still lingers in the former Zuiderzee towns such as Monnickendam, Hoorn, and Edam. In this must-visit town, take time to explore the Voorhaven. The vibrant coats of arms adorning the old merchant houses’ façades reflect the immense wealth and influence their owners once possessed. Around the Damsluis, you’ll find a variety of genuine Dutch souvenirs, from traditional farmer’s scarves and wooden clogs to, naturally, Dutch cheese, freshly made from the milk of the curious cows roaming the nearby polders.
