Münsterland
Day 1 - Arrival in Bad BentheimThe town of Bad Bentheim is a stone's throw from the Dutch border near Twente. Bad Bentheim is known for Bentheim Castle and the Bentheimer sandstone.Day 2 - Bad Bentheim to Ahaus - 45 kmYou cycle past the medieval castle and leave the high-lying Bad Bentheim. Soon you will reach the vast Gildehauser Venn peat bog.
Along the Dreiländersee and right through the forest area Rüenberger Wald you reach Gronau, with the Rock 'n Popmuseum. After Gronau you will soon cross the border into the Netherlands and cycle through the nature reserves of Aamsveen and Witte Veen. Then cross the border again at the historic water mill Haarmühle and soon reach your hotel, just outside Alstätte.Day 3 - Ahaus to Billerbeck - 54 kmToday you cycle to Billerbeck, through a predominantly agricultural and sometimes gently sloping landscape. Soon you will pass through Ahaus, with its baroque castle. You cycle through the nature reserve 'Liesner Wald' to Haus Egelborg and Legden. From Legden the route goes through the historic village of 'Asbeck' to the small but worth seeing pilgrimage village of Eggerode. After Eggerode you cycle through the beautiful Schloß Darfeld to the cathedral town of Billerbeck.Day 4 - Billerbeck to Münster - 41 kmThe following cycle tour takes you past the source of the river Berkel and through the hilly landscape of the Baumberge to the historic towns of Nottuln and Havixbeck. After Havixbeck you leave the hills and cycle past Burg Hülshoff and beautiful country houses. You enter the episcopal city of Münster along the route of the former city wall. This old university city, which was a thriving Hanseatic city during the Middle Ages, has a glorious past.
A walk through the old town of Münster is full of variety: characteristic gabled houses with their arcades, exclusive shops in a beautiful old town. An astronomical clock can be seen on the Domplatz, a marvel of the late Middle Ages whose calendar extends to the year 2071.Day 5 - Münster to Steinfurt-Borghorst - 48 kmYou cycle from Münster to Steinfurt-Borghorst. You leave Münster past Schloss Münster and cycle through various nature reserves to Greven. From Greven you follow the cycle route along the river Ems and through the Weptruper Berge nature reserve. You reach Borghorst via quiet roads and paths.Day 6 - Steinfurt-Borghorst to Bad Bentheim - 58 kmThe next day you will pass through the Bagno Park in Burgsteinfurt. This former pleasure garden has an exotic park landscape with a Chinese palace and a Greek temple. Just outside Steinfurt you will pass the beautiful castle Steinfurt, completely surrounded by water, which is still inhabited. A walk through the picturesque surroundings is certainly worthwhile. From Steinfurt you cycle on the old railway line to Rheine. After a visit to the Altstadt you leave the city along the Ems. You will pass through Salzbergen and via the Samerrot nature reserve in Schüttorf. You cycle back to Bad Bentheim via the Bentheimer Wald.Day 7 - DepartureYour cycling holiday ends after breakfast.
