Frisian Tradition: the Elfstedentocht

Leeuwarden, Sneek, Workum, Dokkum… Is it finally happening again? Yes indeed: it giet oan. At last, another Elfstedentocht. This time, without the freezing hardships, but with all eleven cities. Over the course of seven days, you’ll cycle along canals and ditches, over quaint bridges, and through idyllic villages like Stavoren and Hindeloopen. Park your bike for a moment and stroll along picturesque canals with views of historic ramparts and water gates.

Romantic village centers

Balk and Sloten take the crown when it comes to romantic village centers. They abound in monumental buildings with beautiful stepped and neck gables. The latter is the smallest city in Friesland. Park your bike for a moment and stroll along the lovely canals with views of the historic ramparts and water gates. You’ll also pass through Bolsward, the charming Langweer, Lemmer, Rijs, and the beautiful Gaasterland.

Woudagemaal: aging giant

If you cycle from the harbor town of Lemmer back to Workum, you’ll pass the Woudagemaal, the steam pumping station named after D.F. Wouda, who, as chief engineer of the Provincial Water Authority, was responsible for the design and construction of the world’s oldest still-operational steam pumping station. Definitely worth a stop. Every winter, the station is activated to pump the enormous amount of excess water from the Frisian lake system into the IJsselmeer. It takes six hours to start up and warm up this aging giant.
