From Makkum, you cycle back to Workum and follow a beautiful bike path along the Flakke and Aldegeaster Brekken to the old Hanseatic town of Bolsward. This town, once built on three terps along the former Middelzee, has a charming centre with canals and dozens of historic buildings. You then continue cycling to IJlst, traditionally a town of woodworking and shipbuilding. A remnant of this heritage is the wooden sawmill “De Rat,” which is still fully operational. After this, it’s not far to Sneek. This city, formed from two closely situated terps, was surrounded by fortification walls and canals in the 16th century. It became Friesland’s best-defended city and developed into a market town. The city’s showpiece is the Waterpoort, built in 1613.
