Gaasterland and Frisian Lakes

Day 1 - Arrival in WorkumDay 2 - From Workum to Sneek - 41 kmFrom Workum you cycle on a beautiful cycle path along the Flakke and Aldegeaster Breken to the old Hanseatic city of Bolsward. This city, once located on three mounds on the former Middelzee, has a beautiful center with canals and dozens of monuments. Then you cycle to IJlst, traditionally a town of woodworking and shipbuilding. A remnant of this is the wood sawmill De Rat, which is still in full operation. After this it is not far to Sneek. This city, created from two closely spaced mounds, was surrounded by ramparts and canals in the 16th century. It became the best defended city in Friesland and grew into a market town. The showpiece of the city is the water gate from 1613.Day 3 - From Sneek to Rijs or Lemmer - 46 or 49 kmThe following day you cycle through the Frisian lake area. You cross by ferry to the attractive village of Langweer. After this you cycle to Sloten, the smallest of the Frisian Eleven Cities. Beautiful merchant houses along the canal are a reminder of the former wealth of this old fortified town. Via Balk you reach Gaasterland. This hilly nature reserve was formed by land ice in the penultimate ice age. You will arrive at your hotel in Rijs on cycle paths through extensive deciduous forests.Day 4 - From Rijs or Lemmer to Workum - 32 km or 50 and departureYou will cycle along the IJsselmeer through the rolling forests and meadows to Stavoren. This former Hanseatic city is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands. The place was founded around the year 900 and was already an important trading city in the 11th century. You will cycle over and along the IJsselmeer dike to Hindeloopen, which is surrounded on three sides by the IJsselmeer. The old seafaring and fishing town has its own dialect, its own traditional costume and its own painting. You will find narrow canals with wooden bridges and beautiful commander's houses of the Hindelooper captains from the 16th and 17th centuries. Your cycling tour ends back in Workum.
