From Montargis to Paris

This eight-day tour takes you from the peaceful French countryside of Montargis to the vibrant city of Paris, combining relaxed cycling with a comfortable river cruise. Along the way, you will explore places such as Moret-sur-Loing, Barbizon and Fontainebleau, each offering its own charm and character. From artistic heritage to royal history, every stop adds a new layer to your journey.

A Change of Pace

As you leave the peaceful countryside behind, the landscape gradually shifts towards rivers, forests and charming villages. You cycle along quiet canals and the Seine, pass through the famous forest of Fontainebleau Forest with its ancient trees and sandy paths, and ride through picturesque towns such as Moret-sur-Loing. As you approach Paris, the surroundings gradually become more lively again, creating a beautiful contrast between tranquil nature and vibrant city life.

Royal Grandeur

As you cycle through the forest, you arrive at the magnificent Château de Fontainebleau, one of France’s most important royal residences. For over seven centuries, kings and emperors stayed here — including Napoleon, who signed his abdication in this very palace. Surrounded by vast woodlands, the château reflects a long and layered history, visible in its grand halls, elegant courtyards and beautifully decorated rooms. As you walk through its gates, you step into a world of royal life and power, where history feels close and tangible. It’s a striking contrast to the quiet forests you’ve just cycled through, adding a sense of grandeur to your journey.

From Kings to Painters

Continuing through the forest, you travel through a landscape that has inspired artists for generations. In the village of Barbizon, painters of the Barbizon School settled in the 19th century, choosing to capture nature directly and realistically rather than in studios. Drawn by the soft light, ancient trees and ever-changing scenery, they created a new way of painting that brought them closer to nature Their work laid the foundation for Impressionism, and you can still visit the local museum to learn more about their lives and art. As you ride through these same forests and quiet paths, it’s easy to see what inspired them — a landscape that feels timeless, calm and full of atmosphere.
