IJssel and Vecht

Day 1 - Arrival in Vorden and possibility for an introductory tour - 10 or 15 kmAfter arrival you can take a short welcome ride around Vorden. You first pass the moated Vorden castle, which is inhabited, but can be visited. You then cycle to Hackfort Castle (Natuurmonumenten) with a forest for walkers, a water mill and a historic vegetable garden. There is a brasserie in the coach house. You follow the Baakse Beek back to your hotel.Day 2 - From Vorden to Deventer - 37 kmYou cycle to the ancient Hanseatic city of Zutphen, located on the IJssel. Its prestige is already determined from afar by the many towers. The atmospheric city center has winding streets, squares, courtyards and numerous monuments. The Stedelijk Museum tells you about the history of Zutphen and De Graafschap. Worth seeing are the St. Walburg Church with the Librije and parts of the city walls with a water gate over the Berkel. You then follow the IJssel through floodplains rich in birds and flowers to the Hanseatic city of Deventer, where you pass the ruins of the tax collector's castle Nijenbeek. From your hotel located on the IJssel, a ferry will take you to the historic city center of Deventer in 5 minutes. On the large market square De Brink you will find the Waag (museum), the Wilhelmina fountain and monumental facades all around. Particularly picturesque are the streets to the Bergkerk, where the annual Dickens Festival takes place. On this short route you have extra time to see Zutphen and Deventer.Day 3 - From Deventer to Zwolle - 51 kmYou cycle out of Deventer along the IJssel. Via the manors Nieuw Rande and De Haere you drive to the village of Olst, where you cross the IJsselveer. You follow the river further north past the dike village of Veessen with its windmill and small river harbour. Here you can take a ferry across to Fortmond, a beautiful nature reserve intersected by old waterways. From the watchtower you have a magnificent view. From the beautiful old village of Wijhe you follow the shore again. A bicycle ferry makes a trip to the picturesque town of Hattem (Anton Pieck Museum) possible. You will reach Zwolle, which is surrounded by a moat, largely on traffic-free dike paths, along natural floodplains and the former Windesheim monastery. With the Museum de Fundatie, an Kunstlooproute, the Broerenkerk alias the 'book church' and excellent restaurants, the atmospheric Hanseatic city has put itself well on the cultural and culinary map.Day 4 - From Zwolle to Ommen - 43 or 60 kmToday you cycle along the strongly meandering Vecht via Dalfsen to Ommen. Ommen owes its membership to the Hanze mainly to its strategic location on the Vecht. You pass beautiful castle estates, wooded moraines and flowery hay meadows. A detour along the hamlets of Beerze and Junne shows you beautiful centuries-old hall house farms. The regional museum of Ommen is located in a flour mill.Day 5 - From Ommen to Holten - 49 kmJust below Ommen you pass the castles Het Laer and Eerde. After a visit to the old village of Den Ham in Twente, you follow the river Regge southwards along wooded heights (moraines) that formed during the last Ice Age. You can ignore the Lemelerberg and Achmerberg on your right, enjoying cycling on riverbank paths along old ash trees, hay meadows and fish ladders. After the beautiful, somewhat touristy village of Hellendoorn, you cannot escape a short climb to your hotel on the Holterberg (Sallandse Heuvelrug). Nearby is the Holterberg nature museum, unique for its lifelike dioramas of the European animal world.Day 6 - From Holten to Vorden - 43 kmYou enter the gently sloping Achterhoek along the 'mountains' of the Twente village of Markelo. On the way to the fortified town of Lochem, you will pass the Huis Verwolde castle with a beautiful garden and the thickest oak in the Netherlands. Then you go through the ancient oak and beech forest of the Havezate Ampsen. In Lochem, the Gudula Church has stood proudly in the middle of the market for 1100 years, beautifully surrounded by Renaissance houses and a few lovely terraces. You finally return to Vorden past the castles De Wildenborch, Het Enzerinck and Den Bramel.Extension - Tour to Doesburg and Bronkhorst - 60 kmWith an extension in Vorden, a nice tour can be made to the historic Hanseatic city of Doesburg, including the picturesque IJssel town of Bronkhorst.
