Northern Highlights

754! The year Boniface was murdered in Dokkum. 1469! After a major fire, the people of Groningen began building the current Martinitoren. Did you know they call it d’Olle Grieze, the Old Grey, because of the grey sandstone from Bentheim in Germany? On this trek through Groningen and Friesland, you’ll discover plenty of fascinating history. Leeuwarden and Dokkum boast rich pasts, and on Ameland, you’ll find the beautiful North Sea beach waiting for you.

Culinary Delights

Back on the mainland, you cycle from Holwerd through the scenic Lauwersoog National Park to charming villages like Zoutkamp, Winsum, and Onderdendam. And as every evening, it’s time to sit down in restaurant, some even featured in the Gault Millau or Michelin Guid, for delicious culinary dinners you can truly savor. And between courses, you can quiz each other with questions like: “Who lost their life in 754?”

Chirping and Croaking in De Alde Feanen

The National Park De Alde Feanen covers almost four thousand hectares, about eight thousand football fields, making it the largest continuous nature reserve on the Friesland mainland. Once inside the park, you’ll see lakes, peat pools, bluegrass meadows, reed beds, marsh marigold hayfields, swamp forests, and peat moss reed lands. Feeling a bit overwhelmed yet? And that’s not al, around a hundred different bird species breed here. As you cycle through the area, you’ll ride along water and meadows, hop on a ferry now and then, and most of all, listen to all the chirping and croaking around you.

Famous Spy

You don’t have to be a spy to discover that Leeuwarden is happy to share its secrets. At Kelders 33 stands the birthplace of Margaretha Geertruida (Griet) Zelle, better known as the spy Mata Hari. Born there in 1876, she later gained fame as a lady-in-waiting and exotic dancer. During World War I, she was recruited as a spy, though her career in espionage was short-lived. In 1917, the French accused her of being a double agent, a charge that ultimately led to her execution. But whether she truly was a double spy remains a mystery to this day. That very uncertainty has only added to her legend. You can visit her birthplace, and the Fries Museum (Wilhelminaplein 92) is also eager to reveal the secrets behind this iconic figure.
