Denmark definitely makes it easy to relax. Along the quiet roads, through all the greenery or on the water, making your way to yet another new & enchanting island. The Funen Peninsula is known for its beautiful gardens, villages, castles and country houses. It's truly fairytale-like. It comes as no surprise that the famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen found so much inspiration here.
From Svendborg you can visit the islands of Thurø, Tåsinge and Ærø. In Aeroskobing on the island of Ærø, you'll feel like you're stepping into the 19th century. Cycling through fertile landscape, where small farms lie idyllically between the rolling hills. Want to relax even more? The beach is always close by. Place your bike against a sand dune and enjoy some lovely sunshine. Later on, you'll return to Funen by ferry, where you'll spend another day exploring the Danis Alps, the Svannige Bakker. Another delightful and relaxing spot.
The island of Funen will forever be linked to one name: Hans Christian Andersen, it's where this most famous fairytale writer was born. In his supposed birthplace in Odense, you can see original manuscripts of fairy tales such as 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. The fairy tales have been translated in more than 140 countries. The only book more translated is the Bible. Therefore, we highly reccommend to extend this trek with a night in Odense, one of the oldest cities in Denmark that also has a beautiful historic center.
Valdemar's Castle, with its beautiful castle gardens, is located on the island of Tåsinge, which you'll visit from Svendborg. The 17th-century castle shows a beautifully preserved interior. In addition to a tour of the castle (more of a large country retreat), you can also visit an impressive chapel, delve into the toy museum and see an exhibition of hunting trophies.
