The scenic region of Twente offers a feast not only for the eyes but also for your taste buds. Manor houses, forests, and centuries-old farmyards alternate with villages and (art) towns. Both the shorter and longer routes begin in Tubbergen. From there, you’ll cycle through the charming and artsy town of Ootmarsum and into the stunning nature area of Het Springendal, heading toward Lattrop, Oldenzaal, or De Lutte. Along the way, you’ll experience the unique Twente landscape, with its distinct hills such as Haken-, Paas-, and Tankenberg. The longer route also includes visits to Hengelo and Enschede.
In the art town of Twente, you’ll be amazed as you walk through the streets. No litter, no weeds between the cobblestones. The conclusion: the locals truly care for their Ootmarsum. The town dates back to the 13th century, and its historic atmosphere can still be felt today. Admire the stepped gables, pop into the galleries, and relax on a cozy terrace. Museum Het Palthehuis in Oldenzaal is located just behind the Market Square, and one of its most striking exhibits is “The Chair of Huttenkloas.” In the 16th century, this torture chair was used to force confessions from murderers. The seat was embedded with nails, and an iron belt was tightened around the victim's waist. Klaas Annink was subjected to this same chair. In 1755, a violent robbery ended in murder. Before he confessed, he spent 110 days in this painful chair. Afterward, he was publicly executed in the Market Square.
