Your journey begins in Weert and leads to the bishop’s city of Roermond, with a stop at the historic castle in Horn. Make sure to visit some of its beautiful churches, such as the St. Christopher’s Cathedral or the Romanesque Munster Church. From there, the route follows the Maas River to Tegelen, where you’ll dine in style at the beautifully restored 17th-century Holtmühle Castle—something to look forward to all afternoon. The extended 6-day tour also includes visits to Thorn and Maaseik, with a stay at the charming Wurfeld Castle Hotel in Maaseik. A truly regal getaway!
The Limburgse vlaai actually has German roots. In earlier times, men from Limburg would travel to southern Germany for work. There, they saw women making Platkuchen, a dish made from leftover dough and fruit that didn’t sell at the market. Upon returning home, they asked their wives to make something similar. And thus, the vlaai was born! However, it was Antje van de Statie from Weert who helped make the vlaai famous outside of Limburg. Around 1926, she began selling small pies or 'vlaaien' to train passengers at the station, claiming, “Real Weertse vlaaien!” That’s how the vlaai became a sought-after treat in other areas as well. Her statue now stands in front of the station.
"Ho ho..." A celebration unfolds on the terrace at Munsterplein. You turn your plate around and find that the Christoffelvlaai in front of you is made from layers of light meringue, covered with mousse and topped with dark chocolate flakes. Wow. You take another bite. "Ho ho, not so eager," you hear the statue of Pierre Cuypers behind you say. Huh? Pierre, born in Roermond in 1827, designed buildings much alike sugar cakes, often finishing them with numerous towers, pinnacles, and an array of decorative elements. Besides his own Cuypershuis in Roermond, he also designed De Haar Castle near Haarzuilens and Amsterdam's Central Station.
Located on the border between Limburg and North Brabant, you'll find the National Park de Groote Peel. Formerly a raised bog swamp, it is now a large and unique nature area. Its uniqueness lies in the absence of roads, power lines, and other modern infrastructure running through it. This makes it an ideal habitat for birds, with around one hundred species breeding here. Internationally, the park is recognized as a 'wetland' and is also designated as a Natura 2000 site.
Though it feels like a village, Thorn once was a mini principality, for 800 years. Over thirty abbess-princesses ruled here until the French arrived in 1794. They imposed a tax: the larger the window, the higher the tax. So, what did the impoverished residents do? They bricked up their windows and covered their homes in whitewash to conceal their poverty. Today, it’s this pristine white that draws many visitors.
