Along the Lahn

Indeed, you can stroll along the banks of the Lahn, a tributary of the Rhine, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. But from the saddle, you’ll discover so much more. Majestic castles, imposing monasteries, and beautiful cities like the romantic Marburg. Before you begin your journey, take a walk through the winding streets of this vibrant student city. Climb up to the castle and step into the magnificent Elisabeth Church.

Succumbing to all the beauty

Then, you slowly follow the winding river downstream. Towards Wetzlar, a town filled with authentic baroque buildings and beautifully restored half-timbered houses. After Weilburg, also steeped in baroque grandeur, you arrive at the historic Limburg an der Lahn. Turning left at Koblenz, just a bit further along the Rhine, lies the famous Loreley. However, the singing nymphs have no influence over you. By now, along the Lahn, you’ve already succumbed to the magnificence of the towns and the surrounding natural beauty.

Auf Wiedersehen Limburg

The entire historic city center of Limburg an der Lahn is protected as a heritage site. That says it all. You lean your bike against the facade of the higher St. Georg's Cathedral. Around the church, you’ll find many beautiful half-timbered houses, some of which are even 800 years old. This medieval character can be found often in this hilly town, with its many cobbled streets. You sit down on one of the cozy squares for Kaffee und Kuchen. Then, it’s time to move on. From the 600-year-old stone bridge, you take a last look at the Romanesque cathedral. Auf Wiedersehen. You decide. You’ll definitely be back.

Optics City Wetzlar

Wetzlar is also full of centuries-old half-timbered houses. The cathedral proudly towers over the old town. As you stroll through the atmospheric streets, you’re sure to come across the enormous Minox Spy Camera XXL, a magnified version of the miniature camera invented here in 1936. The camera is part of the Optics Trail. Along with Leica, many producers of cameras and optical equipment are based here. That’s why Wetzlar is often called the “City of Optics.” The trail gives you an interactive look into the world of optics. Here, you can use a secret camera to peek inside a mini half-timbered house, take an eye test, or learn why a diamond sparkles.

Clichés in Koblenz

If you stay in the saddle all the way to Koblenz, the winding bike path will easily lead you to Das Deutsche Eck, the point where the Moselle meets the Rhine. For lunch, just behind the imposing statue of Emperor Wilhelm I, you’ll find the shaded Köningsbacher Biergarten. And to fulfill all the clichés, choose a Brötchen with a hearty Bratwurst. The beautiful view of the Moselle comes as a bonus. For an even better view of the converging rivers, later on, you can take the cable car across the Rhine to the much higher Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
