Angles-sur-l'Anglin lies strategically at the intersection of the Poitou, Berry, and Touraine regions. This led to the construction of a robust castle in the 11th century, the remains of which now define the village’s romantic skyline. Over the centuries, it was frequently destroyed and rebuilt—later also serving as a monastery. Thanks to its location, watermill, and bridge, the village became a regional trading center. Though it no longer holds that function, it still attracts many visitors.

Turbulent years for abbey

Located on the edge of the Creuse river, Notre Dame de Fontgombault abbey was founded in the 11th century and looks back on a turbulent history. Destroyed by the Calvinists in the 16th century, the abbey was rebuilt over a hundred years later. Even during the French Revolution, it was hit again. The complex was partly demolished and sold as national property. Then the monks left again, and new ones came in their place. The monks living there now make their living from farming and making ceramics.

Angles-sur-l'Anglin ranks high on the list of 100 most beautiful villages in France. The very picturesque village is located on either side of the banks of the Anglin. The charming hotel has a courtyard with garden, terrace and parking. Here you will find hospitality and tranquillity. All ten rooms are different and stylishly decorated. In addition to the regular hotel rooms, a number of suites with a terrace can be booked. As well as the jagged meanders of the Anglin, the cycling routes during this holiday lead along those of the Gartempe and Creuse rivers. The river valleys are steep, but the plateaus in between are gently sloping. To alternate cycling tours, we have prepared two circular walks for you.
