To the Next Stop

May I have the route of the former railway lines in Belgium from you? If you ‘play’ the Vennbahn quartet, you collect four countries. This cycling trip starts in Dutch Maastricht and takes you along the Vennbahnen, former railway lines, through Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

Playing a game

The traffic-free routes take you comfortably through the most stunning landscapes. Through quiet valleys, across rugged heights, and past deserted stations to yet another beautiful village or town. Next stop: Eupen, then Sankt Vith. By then, you’re already in the High Fens Nature Park. Next, cross the border to Clervaux. On the way to Bütgenbach, enjoy more breathtaking views. Then through charming Monschau (full of half-timbered houses) to Aachen, where Charlemagne is buried in the cathedral. Finally, back to Maastricht (or ’s-Gravenvoeren).

Festive Cycling

When the “Railway of the High Fens” opened between Aachen and Luxembourg in 1885–1889 for coal transport, it was celebrated with festivities and fanfare music. But in the second half of the last century, the line fell into decline—until it was transformed into a first-class cycling route that has been very popular for several years. No wonder, as the traffic-free routes carry you effortlessly and peacefully through the most beautiful hilly landscapes of the High Fens and the Eifel. Festive cycling, then—only the fanfare is now missing.

Patient Maastricht

A sea of cozy terraces, countless bistros, and charming little shops. It’s no wonder you find it hard to leave the welcoming city of Maastricht. But don’t worry: after this beautiful walking tour, the most Burgundian city in the Netherlands patiently awaits your return. And if you stay another night, you’ll have all the time to wander through the prettiest streets, visit the Helpoort, taste a beer at Brouwerij Bosch, or browse at Boekhandel Dominicanen (housed in a beautifully restored church).

Beautiful Monschau

Want to admire half-timbered houses? You could spend quite some time in Monschau. The construction of these houses began in the 13th century. Builders then created a load-bearing structure from wooden beams for the walls, which were filled in with clay. Besides these photogenic beauties, the town also enchants with its location on the romantic Rur River. Be sure to visit Monschau Castle, the various old churches, and the Rotes Haus, now a museum showcasing antique interiors. By today’s standards, a house like this would cost several million euros.
