Going on a cycling holiday for the first time? 3x cycling holidays for beginners

More and more people are opting for a fun and adventurous cycling holiday. Not surprisingly, because with a cycling holiday you discover the world in a healthy and active way. You cycle through beautiful landscapes and visit local sights. But new to cycling holidays, where to go? Which cycling holidays consist of easy cycling routes with slight descents or climbs? We list the top 3 first cycling tour options below!

1. Slow Danube Cycling Trail; nice and flat along the river

Trek, 11 days, hotels, BB, incl. luggage transport. From €755

We start with a real cycling classic, not only for starters but also for seasoned cycling holidaymakers. During this trip, you will of course receive a detailed route description. By the way, you can also put the routes on your smartphone. But it's actually quite simple. You just follow the river all the way to Vienna. Always straight ahead: immer geradeaus. Which, by the way, is much less boring than it sounds. The nice thing about this tour is that you can often cycle on both sides of the Danube. This allows you to regularly dismount – and unwind – to take a ferry to the other side. Then on to the next baroque stopover town.

Lovely pedalling

Like a waltz, you sway along the meandering river, pass sturdy castles, dive into villages where geraniums grow lushly in the window boxes and stop at places with names like ‘Gasthof Jägerwirt’ for an affordable giant schnitzel. The flat cycle path on both sides of the river makes for great pedalling, by the way. And yet you are cycling in the middle of the mountains. After the impressive monastery of Melk and the vineyards of the Wachau, the most beautiful stretch of the Danube, Vienna comes into sight, your destination on this first cycling tour!

2. Around Lake Constance; impressive views

Trek, 6–8 days, hotels, BB, half board optional, incl. luggage transport. From €570

You expect those authentic villages, of course. With half-timbered houses where romance drips from the facades. Where waitresses in white lace aprons serve huge mugs of beer, oversized schnitzels and fruity wine. OK, there's that Germany too. But cycling around Lake Constance, the eastern neighbour also shows a very contemporary face. With fashionable marinas, designer hotels, trendy restaurants, modern cafés and a population that looks forward rather than back. The mix of then, now and later surprises you again and again during this very relaxed cycling holiday.

Always pleasant cycling

During this relaxed trek – the daily distances are short – you will visit Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This super trio presents you with picturesque villages, baroque churches, old half-timbered houses, beautiful nature, cosy terraces and… a mild climate. The latter also makes for pleasant cycling from early spring to late autumn. If that’s not boundless enjoyment.

3. Around the Zuiderzee; familiar close by

Trek, 7/8 days, hotels, BB, half board optional, incl. luggage transport. From €495

"Don't whine about the coffee, we all get old and limp." For wise life lessons, pop into the tiny Enkhuizer Almanac Museum. The lessons are on various cards in the vestibule. A little further on, at the Flessenscheepjesmuseum, you will find out how to pilot a ship through a bottle neck. Also in the Zuiderzee Museum (indoor and outdoor museum), the times when the sea was still raging are revived. Here you can see a clog with a sail and elsewhere volunteers smoking the “just caught” fresh herring and anchovies. You will experience this and other water romance to the full during your cycling holiday along the former Zuiderzee, now the IJsselmeer.

Get a breath of fresh air

You will pass historic villages and towns such as Volendam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Stavoren, Giethoorn and Kampen. And all those old stepped gables, canals and merchant houses are interspersed with old and new nature reserves. Waterland, for example, with bird-rich meadows, ferries and old waterways. You literally ignore the super-long Afsluitdijk if you take the ferry to Stavoren and relax. Lovely: a breath of fresh air on the water.
