Unrivaled Enchanted Land

According to the folk song of Twente, there lies between the rivers Dinkel and Regge an unrivaled land with streams, rolling fields, golden grain, and purple heath. That promises a lot! In four or six days, you cycle through the Twente landscape and along often wonderfully smooth, winding bike paths to Almelo, Ootmarsum, Oldenzaal, Hengelo, and Enschede.

Hats Off

But it is above all the nature between these destinations that truly enchants you. Like on the Singraven estate by the beautiful Dinkel stream. Also while cycling over the Tankenberg, the highest ‘mountain’ in Twente. You pass the Scottish Highland cattle in the Witte Veen, admire the castles and sculpture gardens in Diepenheim, and on the way to the water mills of Vasse, you’ll encounter the oldest tree in Twente: the Kroezeboom. Take your hat off for a moment, then keep going.

Twente’s Timeless Farms

Twente is not complete without the characteristic farms with plank-clad stepped gables. And a farm isn’t complete without a façade symbol on the roof and a “stiepelteken” by the main entrance. By placing façade symbols in the form of horse heads, thunder brooms, anchors, crosses, and religious icons, the builders entrusted their home to a higher power. The stiepelteken – a support-post symbol – in the center of the double barn doors was meant to ward off evil. Well, and in this way, practical Twente also appears very traditional.

Following the City Walls

The town may be old (founded in 126 AD), but it doesn’t let its age weigh it down. Othmarsheim became Ootmarsum, fortunate to lie on the trade route from western Netherlands to northern Germany. In 1300, it was granted city rights, complete with moats, city walls, and gates. During the Eighty Years’ War, however, Prince Maurice had much of this filled in and demolished. But to this day, you can still trace their path. Good try, Maurice.

Dismount for the Art Gardens

In Diepenheim, you come across various castles and estates, but also the Non Urban Gardens – gardens designed by artists. One example is the Gazebo, a garden featuring 1,393 varieties of hostas, bordered by a double row of 136 red beeches. “A frame for a painting built from a thousand shades of green,” says Belgian artist Urbain Mulkers (1945–2002). Just outside Diepenheim, you’ll find the Boomtuin: a spiral staircase takes you up a 250-year-old oak to a platform with green plants and a fantastic view.
