Dutch Waterline - 6 days

Day 1 Arrival in Weesp or Muiderberg, round trip 16 kmWeesp was a fortified city in the Old and New Dutch Waterline and in the Defense Line of Amsterdam. There are four bastions in the town and many fortresses in the area. On this arrival day you can take a short tour to the Muiderslot, the oldest water castle in Holland and the final piece of several water lines.Day 2 From Weesp or Muiderberg to Utrecht 59 or 56 kmAlong the Naardermeer nature reserve, you will arrive in the fortified town of Naarden. You can reach the Vecht via a cycle path between the Ankeveensche Plassen and the Spiegelplas. Following the river, you will pass beautiful fortresses, knights' homesteads and country estates. You cycle to Utrecht via Loenen aan de Vecht, Breukelen and Maarssen. Many forts lie like a collar around the city, no wonder because Utrecht was an important link in the New Dutch Waterline.Day 3 From Utrecht to Wijk bij Duurstede 56 kmFort Rhijnauwen, just outside Utrecht on the Kromme Rijn, is the largest fort of the New Dutch Waterline. Not much further is Fort at Vechten. The strategic location at the intersection of the Roman Limes and the New Dutch Water Line make the fort the icon of the Water Line. The Waterline Museum is located on the fort site, where the unique story is told about the defense of the Netherlands with the help of water. After a visit to the museum you will cycle through beautiful city parks and the special Verdronken Bos to the Lek. You drive along the river to the history-rich Wijk bij Duurstede.Day 4 From Wijk bij Duurstede to Gorinchem 51 kmYou drive along the Lek to the medieval town of Culemborg. The water management of the Waterlinie is clearly visible at Fort Everdingen. Then you cycle south through glass city Leerdam and along the lovely Linge to Fort Vuren aan de Waal. Cross the river by ferry to the Loevestein Castle on the other side of the river, which became famous for Hugo de Groot's escape in a book chest. Finally, you will sail from Woudrichem to Gorinchem. Together with Woudrichem and Loevestein Castle, Gorinchem formed an impregnable fortress triangle for a long time as part of the New Dutch Waterline.Day 5 From Gorinchem to Nieuwkoop / Noorden 61 kmFrom Gorinchem you cycle north through the open landscape of the peat meadow area the Groene Hart. In Ameide you cross the Lek by foot ferry and cycle on to Woerden. The fortified town of Woerden was the headquarters of the Old Dutch Waterline for centuries. Through a water-rich nature reserve you reach your hotel that offers a beautiful view over the Nieuwkoopse Plassen.Day 6 From Nieuwkoop to Weesp 45 or 54 km and departureVia the Vinkeveensche Plassen you reach Fort de Botshol. From here you follow the Stelling van Amsterdam. This defense line was built between 1843 and 1914 and has been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1996. You cycle through a low moor area with wide ponds, narrow ditches and extensive reed lands and along the rivers Waver and Gein. You will return to Weesp through the village of Abcoude with its rich history.
