Yellow, orange, red, white, purple... there's no shortage of color in the bulb fields. But the coveted black is missing. The only "black tulip" can be found in Lisse. The Museum De Zwarte Tulp (Grachtweg 2A) presents the history of the bulb, gives you a glimpse into the former office of a bulb grower, and showcases old machines that were considered modern technology at the time.
Even outside of bulb season, there’s plenty to see. From Amsterdam, you cycle to Marken, where you board the ferry to Volendam. After visiting monumental towns like Monnickendam and Broek in Waterland, you’ll reach the Zaan region, of course featuring the famous Zaanse Schans and the first store of Albert Heijn. Also highly recommended: the Czar Peter House (Krimp 23), a rather crooked wooden house from 1632. It’s named after the Russian Tsar Peter the Great, who lived there for eight days. It is also one of the oldest houses in the Netherlands. Then on you go, through the vast dune landscape of the Kennemerland National Park to Haarlem and Noordwijk, and through the colorful bulb region back to Amsterdam.
Before you know it, you've cycled right out of the village again, so hop off your bike and explore Broek in Waterland on foot. The charming wooden houses are painted in a shade of grey known as Broekergrijs, and almost every building is decorated with lovely details. This made the village internationally famous as early as the 18th century. While traveling incognito through the Netherlands, Joseph II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, visited the village in 1781. He asked if he could take a look inside one of the small houses, but a farmer’s wife replied briskly, “No time,” and closed the door in his face. No matter, there's plenty to see outside too.
Smell those hyacinths, and take in the sight of all the colorful tulips, with entire fields filled with red, yellow, and purple. It’s no surprise that tourists from all over the world come here. A world-famous sight like this is something you really have to see for yourself. On a bike ride through the vibrant fields around Hillegom and Lisse, you’ll come across them. But no matter how carefully you look, you won’t find any black tulips. Flower bulb growers have been trying for years to develop a truly black variety, and they’ve even come up with creative names for them, such as Ace of Spades, Queen of the Night, and Black Diamond. But so far, the tulips have stayed dark purple.
