Rhodes Kolossos

The Kolossos tour is a 15-day circuit around the entire island. On this trip, you stay two nights in each stopover town, making it nice and relaxed. Or you can choose to take a more challenging route through the inland. The varied landscape is greener in the west and sometimes rugged in the east, with Greek hospitality just as warm everywhere. You can also take a boat trip to the picturesque island of Symi. » read more about Rhodes Kolossos

All the beauties of Rhodes

Although Rhodes doesn’t look like a chessboard from the air, two grand dames rise high above the rest of the island. The white lady is the charming Lindos, with its cozy winding streets lined with shops and terraces at her feet. At the top, you’ll find the stunning Acropolis, 150 years older than the one in Athens. The black lady is medieval Rhodes Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. Here, you can’t miss the Palace of the Grand Masters and the Street of the Knights.

Many atmospheres along the way

Besides these two, you will discover all the other ‘beauties’ of the island in fifteen days. From Kalavarda, you first visit the ancient city of Kamiros. Then you descend along the west coast to the wine village of Embonas and the farming village of Apolakkia. Through the sparsely populated south, the east coast invites you to stop at the white Lindos. Passing citrus groves, you reach Archangelos. Time for a day at a beautiful beach. Then on to the grand dame Rhodes Town, where you can relax on a lively tavern terrace. Time for a café frappé or an ouzo.

Fertile Tsambika

The sandy beach of Tsambika, about 5 km from Archangelos, is one of the most beautiful on Rhodes. Along the shore, you’ll find only a few beach bars and taverns. The Tsambika monastery offers stunning views of the beach and the azure bay. But visitors came here mainly for another reason. Legend has it that women struggling with fertility would climb the mountain barefoot and pray with the monks at the top before descending back to their villages, now fertile. As a token of gratitude, girls were named Tsambika, boys Tsambikos. “I know about five of them,” a Greek elder later says with a smile. “And they all look alike… and like the priest,” he adds jokingly.

Strong Knightly Steel

UNESCO designated the old town of Rhodes City as a World Heritage site, thanks to the centuries-old city walls built by the Knights of St. John around 1309. They built them so well that the Turks only managed to capture the city in 1521, even though the island lies literally within sight of Turkey. Inside those walls, you’ll find numerous highlights, such as the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, city gates, squares, churches, mosques, and the synagogue.

Most Beautiful Acropolis

The white village of Lindos, located on the east coast of the island, lies by a stunning bay. Towering high above the village stands the mighty Acropolis. In ancient times, Lindos had the largest and most powerful trading fleet on the island. The Acropolis is one of the most beautiful in Greece, 150 years older than the one in Athens. After climbing the necessary steps, the ‘must-sees’ follow. The famous relief? Checked! The gate of the Knights of St. John’s fortress? Tick! The long colonnade? Walked! The Hall of the Watchers? Seen!

The Colossus was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The huge statue of the sun god Helios marked the entrance to the harbor of Rhodes. Colossus means “large” and is therefore the namesake of the cycling tour that takes a big loop around the entire island.

In Rhodes Town, you can upgrade to the Saint-Michel Hotel, housed in historic buildings located within the old city walls.
