And they cycled happily ever after

“Could you tell me the way to…?” Of course – and you’ll be pointed toward the town with its ancient half-timbered houses, where, according to legend, a flute player once led all 130 children out of the city in the 13th century. At least, that’s how the tale of the Pied Piper goes. Paving stones with rats guide you through the prettiest buildings and alleys of Hamelin. Then it’s back on the bike. Because the Weser Cycle Route, once voted the most beautiful cycling route in Germany, also leads you to fairytale towns like Bodenwerder (Baron von Münchhausen) and the magnificent Hanseatic city of Bremen (The Bremen Town Musicians).

Fairytale river landscapes

Not just in the cities, but also in the countryside – the land of the Brothers Grimm – the atmosphere feels like a fairytale. In nine days, you cycle from Hann. Münden to Minden and on to Bremen. Meandering along the river, you’ll pass the impressive Bevern Castle, the small basilica in Bodenwerder where the fabulous Baron von Münchhausen is buried, and Möllenbeck, home to one of the best-preserved late medieval monasteries. In the forested Weser Uplands, the journey’s end is (fortunately) still far away. “And they cycled happily ever after.”

Follow the rats

Hamelin’s Altstadt offers so many sights that it’s best to park your bike for a while. Follow the copper rats embedded in the pavement to discover over 300 of the town’s most charming spots! Along the way, you’ll learn about the tale of the “Pied Piper of Hamelin,” who once lured a plague of rats out of the city with his flute. But when his reward was denied, he took revenge by leading the children away too. All those still-beautiful half-timbered houses were left without children. Don’t miss the Rattenfängerhaus (1602), the Hochzeitshaus (1610), the Leisthaus (1585 – fine example of the Weser Renaissance), and the Marktkirche St. Nicolai.

Famous Liar

The historic town of Bodenwerder is best known as the birthplace of Baron von Münchhausen. Because of the tall tales he told about his supposed adventures, he earned the nickname "the Lying Baron." His birthplace now serves as the town hall. Around the town, you'll find various statues that reference his legendary stories. The local Münchhausen Museum offers deeper insights into his life. Don't miss the remains of the medieval fortifications.
