French Flavors

With its blooming sunflowers and deep purple lavender fields, the French Provence is, for many, the land of summer. Yet this region also is very enchanting from early spring to late autumn. Park your bike in the charming village of Chateauneuf du Pape or take a break in a quiet beau village where the local café fills the air with the aroma of coffee, offering a perfect spot to rest in the shade of an ancient olive tree.

Six Tours

Living the good life is possibly nearly all year around in France. The popes thought so, too, which is why they built their mighty Palais des Papes in Avignon, right next to ‘Sur le Pont…’ With Tavel as your base, you’ll be able to discover all these wonderful places. Visit Orange to admire its famous Roman amphitheater, or take a route leading to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Avignon and the towering Mont Ventoux. Another route will take you south to Aramon, nestled beneath the formidable walls of an ancient hilltop fortress. Across the Rhône, you can climb up to the Abbey of Frigolet, which today, still is home to a community of monks.

Ah... The Taste of France

Du pain et du vin... the joy of life and wine, go hand in hand. Surrounding the hilltop village of Châteauneuf du Pape, overlooking the Rhône Valley, you'll find sprawling vineyards that have produced the village’s renowned wines for generations. Thanks to the excellent climate, thirteen varieties of grapes grow here. and skilled winemakers passionately transform them into top-tier wines. Visit a winery and experience the quality firsthand during a tasting session—each glass full-bodied, with a wonderful finish. Pure joie de vivre.

From Palace to Barracks to Monument

Often called the Rome of France, Avignon has earned its title well. For over a century, popes resided here, and left behind the city’s most iconic building: the Palais des Papes. Naturally, such importance needed to be showcased, and in the 14th century, the largest Gothic structure in France was built—a palace that resembles a fortress. Even after the Papal Schism, the building remained under the church’s ownership. That is, until the French Revolution, when it was declared, “No more palace; it will serve as a barracks.” Today, it stands as a monument well worth a visit.

Emperors and Princes in Orange

Orange is home to two extraordinary monuments from the 1st century AD, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Roman amphitheater, constructed for Emperor Augustus, is incredibly well-preserved. Even in Roman times, it was a top-tier theater, and its acoustics are still exceptional today. The Roman triumphal arch is equally impressive. For a glimpse of the remains of the castle of the Princes of Orange, stroll through the wooded park on Saint-Eutrope Hill.
