Dutch Glory

Curious cows, calling wading birds, swaying reeds, and winding ribbon villages, around the Markermeer, the Holland of old still thrives. Explore Waterland, a peaceful area filled with birds, ferries, and historic waterways. Be sure to visit charming towns like Enkhuizen (home to the Zuiderzee Museum), Edam, Volendam, and Marken. This is Dutch glory at its very best.

Where the sea once raged…

Marken, with its iconic wooden houses on stilts, welcomes you to stroll through cozy alleys and quaint drawbridges. The fishing village looks much like it did when the sea still raged here. This cycling holiday takes you from Huizen, past the Muiderslot and through Amsterdam, to experience that timeless Holland. In July and August, you can also take a boat trip (or cycle at other times) to discover the newer Netherlands, Urk and the reclaimed Flevopolders, home to remarkable land art.

Web of Steel

The “Crouching Man,” overlooking the Markermeer from the breakwater in Lelystad, looks up close like a chaotic tangle of metal rods with huge bolts and nuts. This massive structure stands nearly 26 meters tall and is made up of about 1,800 metal rods. Just imagine putting that together! For the artwork Exposure, renowned British artist Anthony Gormley wanted to emphasize the uniqueness of humanity, yet he needed a computer to design and assemble this “Crouching Man.” It’s one of the striking land-art pieces in the Flevopolders.

Time Gone By

At the Zuiderzee Museum, both indoors and out, time seems to stand still. Actors bring the early 20th century to life. You can sit in the old village school desks, buy cinnamon sticks in a traditional Harderwijk candy shop, smell the sharp scent of smoked eel, and wander down to Marker harbor where freshly arrived sailors’ laundry flutters in the breeze. You might almost forget to hop back on your bike.
