The natural surroundings of Eibergen are stunning. As you cycle, you experience the scent of pine trees, the sound of wind rustling through the leaves, the crunch of a twig under your tires, and the greenery of fields and forests all around you. Over the course of five cycling routes from Eibergen, you’ll explore the Achterhoek region, visiting highlights such as the watermill of Haaksbergen, the Buurserzand nature reserve, and the fascinating open-air museum Erve Kots in Lievelde.

Flamingos and Art Gardens

Cycling to Winterswijk (be sure to stop at Mondrian’s childhood home), you’ll pass by the world’s northernmost flamingo colony. Through the woods of Barchem, the route leads to the moated castle Huis Ruurlo, home to works by Carel Willink. Diepenheim, too, is rich in art, with not only galleries and castles, but also artistic gardens inspired by nature.

In the crown of a centuries-old oak, he created a new space. A spiral staircase leads you up to a platform with ferns, mosses, and a bench offering a scenic view. The structure is carefully designed so that the oak remains unharmed. Diepenheim’s town center also features more art, like a bus stop that seemingly takes you all the way to Santiago de Compostela.
