Stockholm is the beautiful capital of Sweden, built on a few islands in the Baltic Sea. You can enjoy cycling or strolling through the old city. The Royal Palace — the official residence of the Swedish royal family — is on the island of Gamla Stan. It is the largest still-functioning palace in the world. It has 609 rooms, including the palace chapel, the throne room, and a museum where you can also see the crown jewels.
After exploring the old city, the coastal area with its thousands of islands is especially inviting. You will often take the ferry, for example to the islands of Rindö and Värmdö. On the holiday island of Sandhamn, you can visit the house of Nora from the popular series Sandhamn Murders, or her little café in the harbor. Then you continue your journey, for example to the idyllic town of Saltsjöbaden. And then another ferry ride, usually short but long enough to enjoy the water and prepare for your next adventure!
Stockholm is proud to have been the hometown of one of Hollywood’s biggest divas. Greta Garbo was born in the Gamla Södra maternity clinic, baptized in the Katarina Church, and performed on stage for the first time at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. After living and working in Hollywood for many years, she returned to Stockholm. She is buried at the monumental Skogskyrkogården cemetery, sometimes called the Père Lachaise of Stockholm. While tourists visit other famous cemeteries, almost no one comes here—perhaps out of respect for Garbo’s life motto: “I want to be alone.”
The best time to visit Stockholm is in the summer, when it hardly gets dark at night. At that time, the city has an almost magical charm. Of course, there is plenty to see during the day. Take a stroll through Gamla Stan, the old town. You will find many attractions there, such as the Royal Palace from 1760 and Stortorget, the main square surrounded by beautiful old houses. A walk through this part of the city, with its many cafés, restaurants, and shops, is a must. But the open-air museum Skansen is also worth visiting. And at the Vasa Museum, you can see the royal ship Vasa, which sank in 1628 and was recovered only in 1961.
