Picobello Puglia

While the "heel of Italy" may be a well-known term, Puglia has remained a less-visited region, preserving its authentic charm. As a result, the baroque towns, olive groves, and cone-shaped houses have remained largely undiscovered—until now. Cycling through this region allows you to experience the very best of this beautiful area.

A Song That Soars

The gently rolling landscape brings to mind the beauty of Tuscany. After visiting the "mushrooms" of Alberobello, you’ll come upon the charming town of Ostuni. Then, head toward the coast, passing through Manduria to the lively port town of Gallipoli. Continuing through Leuca and Otranto, you’ll arrive in Lecce, the most stunning baroque city in the south. Many of its buildings date back to the 17th century, and the soft local stone allows for ornate, intricate designs. One such building is the seminary, which once supplied the Vatican with castrati—singers whose high-pitched voices were the result of castration. Reflecting on this remarkable journey, you can’t help but sing its praises.

Five Baroque Gems

The baroque cathedral of Lecce, originally built in 1144, was reconstructed in 1659 with elaborate marble details. The Basilica di Santa Croce takes things even further, with its intricately adorned facade, columns, and numerous statues of biblical figures, plants, and animals, making it the city’s architectural jewel. Each and every church in Lecce competes for the title of the most beautiful. An entrance ticket gives you access to five baroque highlights: the Basilica di Santa Croce, the Lecce Duomo, the Chiesa di Santa Chiara, the Chiesa di San Mateo, and the Cloister Museum at Piazza del Duomo.

Trulli, Trulli, Trulli

In and around Alberobello, conical houses stand like white mushrooms in the landscape. Their name alone sounds enchanting: trulli (plural of trullo). Their shape is just as magical: round, white, with a conical roof. The oldest ones were built hundreds of years BC. For centuries, these were simple homes for simple people, but now some have been transformed into unique boutique hotels. There are at least 1,500 of these astonishing 'mushrooms' in and around the town of Alberobello.

Remarkable Matera

Matera is renowned for its sassi, ancient cave dwellings that provided shelter for fleeing monks as early as the 8th century. Over the years, these homes were increasingly carved into the caves, eventually leading to the creation of monasteries within the rocks. The sassi remained inhabited until 1953 and are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The unique charm of Matera has made it the setting for several films. As you walk through the city, it truly feels like you're strolling through a movie set—whether it’s from Ben Hur, The Passion of the Christ, or the James Bond film No Time to Die.
