Valencia has plenty to fall in love with: winding streets in its medieval centre, the leafy Turia Gardens and the strikingly futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. Yet there is much more to discover beyond the city. On this cycling holiday, you venture south into a landscape of beaches, rice fields, orange groves and welcoming Spanish towns.
Follow the coastline and sandy dunes towards Albufera Natural Park, an extensive protected wetland renowned for its lake and abundant birdlife. Cycle past pine woods and wide-open rice fields, keeping an eye out for herons and flamingos. The following day, discover Xàtiva, a historic town with an impressive collection of noble buildings. Enjoy easy-going stretches along former railway lines known as Vías Verdes. Later in the week, visit Simat de Valldigna and its former Cistercian monastery, the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Valldigna.
The route takes you through a side of Spain that many visitors never see. On day five, stop at l’Estany beach for a refreshing swim before continuing to Cullera, where you can visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle and the castle above it. The following day, choose from several circular routes towards Riola, with longer options via Corbera. The most rewarding extended route also takes in the atmospheric ruins of the Monastery of La Murta. Finally, cycle back to Valencia. We recommend adding an extra night or two to explore the city.
Once the second city of the former Kingdom of Valencia, Xàtiva has a turbulent history. Set among hills and vineyards, it was the birthplace of members of the powerful Borgia family. In 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession, King Philip V ordered much of the town to be burned. The town was rebuilt, but its residents did not forget: his portrait still hangs upside down in the Museu de l’Almodí. Above the town, the medieval Castle of Xàtiva offers magnificent views across the valley.
Just a short distance from bustling Valencia lies the peaceful landscape of Albufera Natural Park. Here, bird calls carry across the wetlands, traditional fishing houses stand beside the water and rice fields stretch into the distance. The area is widely regarded as the birthplace of Valencian paella, making it the perfect place to enjoy this local speciality.
If you extend your stay in Valencia, make time for La Lonja de la Seda, the city’s spectacular 15th-century Silk Exchange. In its Hall of Columns, eight soaring spiral columns support an extraordinary vaulted ceiling. Built as a statement of the city’s trading wealth, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Valencia’s architectural highlights.
Cycle through the Spain that locals know and love.
