Experience the atmosphere from Vorden

Linking country estates means stylish cycling and enjoying beautiful manor houses and stories of a noble past. The routes from Vorden in the Achterhoek take you past such centuries-old residences, like the castles of Vorden and Hackfort. Noble cycling indeed — you might even feel inclined to raise your pinky finger. Also head towards stately Zutphen, the centuries-old Hanseatic city with its charming center.

Varied circular tours

Another route takes you to Ruurlo. The 14th-century castle houses a branch of Museum MORE, dedicated to Dutch Modern Realism. Just outside the village, you can cautiously explore the cactus oasis, home to six hundred cactus species. You’ll also make trips to Almen and Gorssel, Laren and Lochem, as well as Bronkhorst and Doesburg.

A Nice Gift

Castle Vorden, located on the edge of the forest just outside the village of Vorden, was first mentioned in a deed of sale from 1315. Steven van Vorden gifted the estate with all its outbuildings to his uncle Dirk. Not a bad present at all. The castle looked quite different back then. The square tower was originally part of a medieval structure. That tower and the drawbridge still recall its defensive function—quite different from the more flamboyant Hackfort, on the other side of Vorden.

Chained Up

Wandering through the intimate streets of Zutphen, you can hear the calls of merchants, the clucking of chickens, and the rumble of handcarts. This vivid image comes easily to mind in the former Hanseatic city with its beautiful historic center. Be sure to visit the 11th-century Walburg Church. Since 1561, the church has also housed the Librije, a library with 750 old books chained to the reading desks. This was to prevent theft (even back then). Only the Italian city of Cesena and the British city of Hereford still have such chained libraries.

Smallest City

A city that feels like a village. Or a village that’s really a city. That’s how you experience the tiny medieval Bronkhorst, located in the floodplains of the IJssel River. From the ferry in Brummen, you quickly cycle into the hamlet. The village was granted city rights in 1482, making it the smallest city in the Netherlands. Of the nearby castle, demolished in 1882, only the wooded motte and the 1345 castle chapel remain. Inside, you’ll find several coats of arms, likely belonging to noble families who once feuded here.
