The Beauty of the Netherlands

Winding along the Maas, Maastricht gradually comes into view. But first, you pass through Sittard, the birthplace of Toon Hermans. Cycling through the center, you can’t help but think of all his beautiful poems. If he had cycled the Pieterfietspad, a tribute to nature would surely have emerged—something about a ‘little beetle, of the male kind, because it had a little mustache.’ The Cyclist's Path closely follows the famous Pieterpad, from Pieterburen to Maastricht. Walking the nearly 500 km can be quite a challenge, but by bike, you can experience the best of the Netherlands in just six stages.

The Most Beautiful Nature Reserves

The route crosses Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, North Brabant, and South Limburg. Along the way, it takes you through the most beautiful nature reserves. There’s no shortage of beetles, for example, in the Drentsche Aa, on the Lemelerberg, and on the Sallandse Heuvelrug. You’ll also find charming terp villages, impressive castles, centuries-old farms, and cozy town centers. "Shall we stop for a quick drink?" And then off you go again. A little further still. You can ride the entire Fietserpad with your smartphone on your bike handlebar. Convenient: with the special Happy Cycling Holidays app.

Counting Beetles

Nature reigns supreme throughout the entire Cyclist's Path. When creating this long-distance route, our route planners made sure to pass through and along as many beautiful nature reserves as possible, while strictly following the original Pieterpad. So, as a nature lover, you’ll have plenty to enjoy. A small selection includes: National Park De Drentse Aa, the Vechtdal, the Sallandse Heuvelrug, Montferland, the Ooipolder, the Maasduinen, and the Limburg Heuvelland. Want to count beetles, just like Toon Hermans? Good luck. And don't lose count!

The Highly Sought-After Coevorden

Due to the surrounding, especially swampy, peat and marshlands, travelers once had to pass through Coevorden to travel from north to south, or vice versa. For the rulers, safely ensconced in their castle, this was reason enough to impose heavy tolls. Thus, Coevorden became a strategic location that other greedy rulers found highly appealing. For this reason, the city was regularly attacked from the late Middle Ages onwards by bishops from Utrecht, Gelre, and Münster. You can still experience this history in the historic town. Just look at the 17th-century Arsenaal, the castle now housing a restaurant, or the small white houses on Molenstraat, which served as garrison housing in 1765. While on the Pieterfietspad, you’ll spend the night in Coevorden.

The Most Beautiful Views

The route from Ommen to Almen runs through the Sallandse Heuvelrug. This area is one of the National Parks in the Netherlands and was formed during the Ice Age, when a massive ice sheet pushed the land forward. In this way, the ice created sixteen huge hills, which now serve as stunning locations offering a magical view of the surrounding area. Moraine ridges, erratic boulders, and burial mounds tell the stories of our ancestors.

Cuypers and Christoffel

"Ho ho..." On the terrace at Munsterplein, a celebration unfolds before you. In front of you is a Christoffel cake, layered with delicious complexity. Wow. You take another bite. "Ho ho, not so eager," you hear the statue of Pierre Cuypers behind you call out. Huhhh, that’s what he should say. The Roermond native Pierre (born in 1827) designed buildings like sugar cakes, often finishing them off with numerous towers, pinnacles, and a wide range of decorations. In addition to his own Cuypershuis in Roermond, he also designed Kasteel De Haar near Haarzuilens and Amsterdam's Central Station.
