A Breeze

Left, right... like a graceful waltz, you wind your way through the Twente landscape. The smooth paths make for perfect cycling. Just north of Enter, you follow the meandering Regge River. The winding trails add a touch of adventure; the curving patchwork landscape doesn’t reveal its secrets all at once. But if you take the time to look around each bend, you’re rewarded with surprising views—like a beautiful Saxon farmhouse, its roof just peeking above the tall corn. In Enter, take a break at the world’s largest wooden clog (see box). Then it's on to the Salland Ridge.

Castles and Art Gardens

You’ll also take a tour to the elegant town of Delden, just outside of which lies Twickel, a centuries-old estate. Alongside the stately castle, you’ll find historic farms, watermills, and the iconic patchwork landscape. Diepenheim is another highlight for castle lovers. It boasts no fewer than six castles, as well as several contemporary art gardens. This hub-based holiday is full of delights—and enjoying it is truly a breeze.

The World’s Largest Clog

It measures 403 cm long, 171 cm wide, and 169 cm high. Over thirty years ago, clog makers Heering and Plas crafted this clog from a single piece of wood. That same year, they earned a spot in the World Guinness Book of Records.

Address: Dorpsstraat 42, Enter.

A little further down the road, you'll find the Clog and Zomp Museum.

Address: Hogebrink 4, Enter.

Dismount for Art Gardens

In Diepenheim, you’ll come across several castles and estates, but also the Non Urban Gardens—gardens designed by artists. One example is the Gazebo, a garden featuring 1,393 varieties of hostas, framed by a double row of 136 red beeches. “A frame for a painting composed of a thousand shades of green,” as Belgian artist Urbain Mulkers (1945–2002) described it. Just outside Diepenheim, you’ll find the Tree Garden: a spiral staircase leads you up along a 250-year-old oak to a platform with green plants and a stunning view.

Largest Estate

A walk across about nine thousand football fields? That will take some time. That’s roughly the size of the nearly four-century-old Twickel estate, just outside Delden. With around 4,500 hectares of land, it’s the largest private estate in the Netherlands. Its highlights include the castle, historic farms, and the intimate patchwork landscape. You’ll also find forests with centuries-old oaks, heathlands, fens, fields, and meadows. The nearly 150 farms on the estate are all recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white shutters.
