The Garden of Twente

In Twente’s quintessential art town, you’ll wander the streets in amazement. Where’s the litter? Where are the weeds between the cobblestones? The conclusion is clear: the locals truly love their Ootmarsum. The town dates back to the 13th century, and you can still feel its historic charm today. Admire the stepped gables and enchanting vistas, step into one of the many galleries, and settle down at a cozy café terrace. They're so inviting, you’ll barely manage to get back on your bike — but do it anyway.

So Much to See

There’s plenty to see on the routes to Lage, Vasse, Tubbergen, Weerselo, Oldenzaal, and Denekamp. Highlights include the Singraven Estate and Castle, the Het Springendal nature reserve, the 14th-century manor Herinckhave, and the Kroezeboom — one of the oldest trees in the Netherlands. You’ll also come across the watermills Frans and Bels, the historic hamlet ’t Stift in Weerselo, and the Paardenslenkte, a heathland near the source of the Mosbeek stream. And that’s not even mentioning the picturesque seepage ponds, waterfalls, and narrow brooks. No wonder this part of Twente is nicknamed “The Garden of the Netherlands.”

Ghosts at Singraven

The Singraven Estate may look peaceful, but appearances can be deceiving. The castle has been haunted for centuries. Around 1505, it was inhabited for ten years by nuns from the Beguine convent in Oldenzaal. One of the Beguines quite literally ran into trouble — she was accused of improper relations with several villagers. When the other nuns uncovered her secret, a sham trial followed. The verdict was no surprise. She received a punishment common for that time: she was bricked up alive inside a wall. For days, locals could hear her cries of despair. Ever since the silence fell, the elegant castle has been haunted.

Torture Chair with Spikes

At the Palthe House in Oldenzaal, you’ll find "The Chair of Huttenkloas." In the 16th century, this torture chair was used to extract confessions from murderers. The seat was lined with spikes, and an iron belt was fastened tightly around the waist. One such victim was Klaas Annink. A violent robbery by the destitute Klaas, who lived in a sod hut, ended in murder. Legend has it the poor man sat on the painful chair for 110 days before he confessed. And the punishment that followed was equally harsh by the standards of the time.

An Estate to Savor

Take hills and meadows, add ponds and hayfields, and finish it off with heathlands and historic farms. The result: Het Springendal — an estate to truly savor. Around 1920, Enschede textile baron Gerhard Jannink purchased the area. Like a master chef, he added his own unique flavor. He transformed the centuries-old farmland into an estate with strong English influences, including a layout of lanes and water features. The medieval “essen” fields, bordered by trees, were carefully integrated into the design. The area is also home to several stunning traditional Twente farmhouses.
