Following in the footsteps of the Romans

Cycle past curious cows and through the German Reichswald, the beautiful Ooijpolder and the equally scenic Maasduinen. Along the way, stop at Museumpark Orientalis, where the world of the Holy Land comes to life. Step back in time to the Roman era. Around 70 AD, some 5,000 soldiers were stationed here, and one of their commanders may even have built a grand villa. The remains can be found near the village of Plasmolen: the largest Roman residence ever discovered in the Netherlands.

Peace and beauty

There is plenty to discover along the way. Relax in charming tea gardens, follow old smuggling routes through dense forests, or visit the Canadian War Cemetery and the Freedom Museum near Groesbeek. Here, the history of the Second World War is brought vividly to life. During Operation Market Garden, Groesbeek was a strategic location where Allied paratroopers landed as part of the advance towards the north. Traces of this historic event can still be seen in the landscape, adding another fascinating layer to your journey.

Beautiful and steeped in history

During the Battle of Mookerheide on 14 April 1574, Hendrik and Lodewijk van Nassau, brothers of William of Orange, fought against Spanish rule. But the Spanish forces proved too strong. The two commanders were killed alongside many other rebels in this famous battle of the Eighty Years’ War. Their bodies were never found. It is believed they sank into the marshes, along with their treasure. Today, the area’s real treasure is its beautiful landscape, with vast heathlands, forests and sweeping views.

The unique Maasduinen

The Maasduinen are home to the longest river dune belt in the Netherlands, making National Park De Maasduinen truly unique. Over the centuries, these dunes were shaped by the interplay of people, wind and water, creating a beautiful natural landscape. In spring and autumn, European cranes migrate across the Maasduinen and stop at one of the many fens to rest before continuing their journey. With a little luck, you may spot them flying overhead. Buzzards and beavers are also common here.

A museum that makes you think

What does freedom mean to you? And was it different then than it is today? These are some of the questions explored at the Freedom Museum just outside Groesbeek. The museum is located in the area where Operation Market Garden took place during the Second World War. Here, visitors discover the story of war and freedom without borders, spanning the Netherlands and Germany, Europe and beyond. Alongside an impressive collection of historical objects, the museum offers interactive and immersive experiences. The building itself is also something special: 12 metres high and shaped like a parachute. From the terrace, you can enjoy beautiful views across the surrounding landscape.
