From Ancient Tombs to Fine Dining

Cycling through northern Drenthe, you’ll explore a landscape shaped by history, home to both the old peat colonies and the prehistoric hunebeds, or megalithic stone tombs. After the vast peat bogs were drained and cultivated, long, narrow villages known as peat colonies took shape. The region was originally inhabited by the Funnel Beaker people, who built their burial monuments near settlements, such as the impressive site in Borger. Next to the largest hunebed, an engaging visitor centre brings this ancient history vividly to life.

Culinary Highlights

This multi-day cycling tour takes you through Zuidlaren, Odoorn, Hoogeveen, the historic hamlet of Kraloo, and the charming castle village of Echten. After a day of scenic landscapes and traditional villages, you'll be welcomed with yet another culinary delight. Some of the restaurants on this route are featured in Gault Millau and Lekker, while others boast a Bib Gourmand or even a Michelin star.

The Oldest Monument in the Netherlands

Drenthe is known for its beautiful nature, ancient history, and diverse landscapes. The hunebed (ancient tomb) in Borger, the oldest monument in the Netherlands, is the iconic symbol of the region. This impressive burial site, like the many other hunebeds found here, was built over five thousand years ago. Using wooden logs, the builders managed to stack the massive boulders on top of one another, an extraordinary achievement. At the Hunebed Centre in Borger, an interactive exhibition brings the world of the hunebed builders, the Funnel Beaker people, to life.

Straight to Prison, No Passing Go

Veenhuizen is a truly unique destination, thanks to its National Prison Museum. This modern and interactive museum tells two fascinating stories. One focuses on the history of Veenhuizen itself, from an unfree colony founded by the Society of Benevolence to a full-fledged prison village. The other explores the broader national history of incarceration in the Netherlands. It may not be the cheeriest outing, but it offers a deeply compelling look at how society once dealt with vagrants, beggars, and drifters.

The Most Beautiful Village in the Netherlands

This cycling tour would not be complete without the characteristic villages of Drenthe. Many still reflect their original elements: stream, heath, communal field, and village green. Be sure to stop and park your bike in the green village of Dwingeloo. And take even more time to explore what is often called the most beautiful village in the Netherlands: Orvelte. Asphalt hasn’t made its way here yet. Instead, you’ll find cobblestone streets, old-fashioned street lamps, historic buildings, and stunning traditional farmhouses.
