Slowly along the Vecht

Along the Overijssel Vecht River, you’ll find vast natural areas and picturesque spots like Rheeze and Beerze. Discover them from the base hotel Mooirivier in Dalfsen. The first ride sets the tone right away when the beautiful medieval castle Rechteren comes into view. Then follows a route to Ommen, where you cycle through idyllic farmland with hedgerows, green meadows, and manor houses between the Vecht and Regge rivers. The literal highlights are the Archemerberg and Lemelerberg hills. A bit of effort on the pedals, but then enjoy a stunning view over the beautiful Vechtdal.

Also lovely walks

And this valley has even more in store. The Hanseatic cities Zwolle and Ommen. In Zwolle, park your bike and take a beautiful walk along ancient facades, magnificent avenues, and the star-shaped city canal. The esdorpen villages Rheeze and Beerze are also on the list. Here, centuries-old Saxon-style farmhouses shape the village scenes. You’ll naturally slow down to enjoy these beautiful landscapes, castles, farms, and brink villages even longer. End your holiday with a walk through the beautiful Vilsteren estate.

Sandstone for the castles

Today, the winding Vecht River looks peaceful and romantic. But once, this river in Overijssel was a bustling hub. It was the perfect route for transporting sandstone from German Bentheim. Many churches, monasteries, and castles were built with this stone. The weirs that regulate the Vecht today didn’t exist back then. That posed a major drawback: sometimes the river water flowed too quickly, forcing navigation to stop. This in turn delayed the construction of churches and castles. The journey from Bentheim to Zwolle usually took six days, but when the water was low, transport could drag on for weeks. “Sorry, castle lord, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.”

Taste the History

When Amsterdam was still a small town, the Dutch Hanseatic cities began to emerge. They were established to expand trade with other cities and to share knowledge. You can still feel the Hanseatic atmosphere in cities like Zwolle and Ommen, with their beautiful remnants from the 14th and 15th centuries. Often near the water, which was crucial for transport. Since the port cities sought cooperation with inland places, Ommen also joined this trade alliance.

Contemporary Dynamism

Zwolle still carries a medieval atmosphere, blended with the trendy vibe of a university city. Young people, entrepreneurs, and creative locals bring a lively modern energy. The city is a cultural hotspot, with Museum de Fundatie standing out the most. Its striking, almost otherworldly appearance is due to its elliptical design, earning it the nickname “the Zeppelin” — though some say it looks more like a UFO.
