The Gateway to the Alps

“Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Isn’t that where they do the ski jumping at New Year’s?” Correct. But this elongated town, with its pastel-colored houses and façades adorned with various scenes, turns out to be charming even outside of winter. You’ll discover that on day 3 of this journey through southern Bavaria. Starting in Bernried or Ambach on the Starnberger See, you head off—perhaps with a yodel—toward Murnau, known for the artists who formed Der Blaue Reiter. The former home of Wassily Kandinsky is now a museum.

Masterful nature

Nature here, at the gateway to the Alps, is a masterpiece in itself. At the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, you’ll pass through Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Then, a short train ride takes you to Scharnitz in Austria. From there, you follow the Isar downstream to peaceful and green Wallgau. In the beautiful spa town of Bad Tölz, you’ll enjoy an extra day to give your legs a well-deserved rest after the many climbs. Finally, return to the Starnberger See, where a relaxing boat ride awaits.

From Two to One

Before the 1936 Winter Olympics took place, they were two separate towns: Garmisch and Partenkirchen. That changed in 1936. According to the IOC's rules, neither town had enough hotel beds on its own. So, the idea—proposed by Adolf Hitler—was to merge them. And so it happened. The strategy worked: Germany was awarded the Winter Games, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen was instantly put on the map as the ultimate winter sports destination. Incidentally, it’s also a wonderful place to visit in summer.

Spa Town with Character

Like a shimmering turquoise ribbon, the Isar winds its way through the spa town of Bad Tölz. To the right, the charming old town beckons. With its beautifully painted baroque façades, Marktstraße is the pride of the city—unsurprisingly so, with the majestic Alps as a fairytale backdrop. It’s no wonder that by the late 19th century, everyone who was anyone came to Bad Tölz, from emperors to artists. Writer Thomas Mann and architect Gabriel von Seidl had their summer residences here and took full advantage of the local iodine springs to treat various ailments. Clever gentlemen indeed.
