'Welcher Seemann liegt bei Nanni im Bett?' A mnemonic to help remember all the German islands (from east to west): Wangerooge, Spiekeroog, Langeoog, Baltrum, Norderney, Juist, and Borkum. Some of these islands are car-free, like Langeoog, which makes cycling particularly relaxing. First, take a tour around the island, then sink into a beach chair and surrender to the slow pace of life.
Over six days, you’ll cycle from Emden and visit the three East Frisian islands of Borkum, Norderney, and Langeoog. Along the mainland, highlights include the charming harbor town of Greetsiel and the famously tilted church tower of Suurhusen—which leans even more than the Tower of Pisa! Heading further north, you’ll explore Lütetsburg Castle and the harbor of Bensersiel. After your time on Langeoog, the historic town center of Aurich is your next stop. This journey offers a rich mix of landscapes and experiences: from windswept dunes and sandy beaches to peaceful forests, meadows, storybook towns, and stately castles.
Norden, with its charming 17th and 18th-century buildings, once was an important port town. In the old town hall, the Ostfriesisches Teemuseum displays various tea sets. Starting in the 18th century, tea became a significant trade commodity passing through the region. This led to the development of a rich tea culture. You can enjoy a cup of Darjeeling Himalaya at the former bus depot, now Café Am Markt.
The 17th-century gabled houses, charming cobblestone streets, and the over six hundred-year-old harbor attract many visitors. With its car-free center, Greetsiel resembles a museum village. But appearances can be deceiving, as the locals still earn their living by catching the finest shrimp. A must-try. The creators of the German crime series Tatort also recognized the appeal, often setting up their cameras here due to the fantastic backdrop.
