Time to check off your list

Want to tick countries off your bucket list? This cycling tour lets you do just that to your heart’s content. After the Netherlands and Belgium comes France—done and dusted. Then Luxembourg and Germany. Check, check! But it’s not just about ticking boxes, it’s about enjoying the journey. And that starts in the burgundy-rich city of Maastricht. You’ll burn off the Limburg vlaai on your ride to Liège. In Belgium, you pass through Liège, Huy, Dinant, Bouillon, and Bastogne. Along the way, you’ll also make a quick stop in the French town of Charleville-Mézières with its Place Ducale, one of Europe’s most beautiful squares.

Enjoy the downhill ride

In Huldange, Luxembourg, the 125-kilometer-long Vennbahn begins, a first-class cycling path along a former railway track. Also downhill—perfect for easy riding. Further on, you’ll park your bike in the cozy Eifel town of Monschau. After Aachen, Maastricht comes back into view. Stop by the impressive St. Servatius Basilica and Polare, the unique bookstore in the over 700-year-old Dominican Church. Two more bucket list must-sees!

Charming Monschau

The town is too small to get lost. Wherever you wander, you’ll always end up back at the River Rur. But that might take a while, as you’ll want to pause at every half-timbered house. Especially the Rotes Haus, an 18th-century patrician home of a cloth manufacturer who lived and worked here. Be sure to peek inside at Laufenstraße 10. Then keep moving—head to Laufenstraße 118, where the Monschauer Senfmühle makes fourteen types of mustard following a family recipe. Finally, settle down beneath the historic cellar vaults of Graf Rolshausen (Kirchstraße 33). Over coffee and cake, you’ll conclude: Monschau is truly beautiful.

Memorable Residence

The medieval castle towering high above the town dominates beautiful Bouillon. The history of this Belgian town and its castle is inseparably linked to Godfrey of Bouillon, the famous knight who led the First Crusade to the Holy Land in 1096. Immerse yourself in the history of the castle and its former inhabitants, but above all, enjoy the view from the towers of the winding Semois River and the lower parts of the town.

Delicious Limburg Cuisine

Besides strolling through the historic center, Maastricht invites you to enjoy its restaurants and bistros that love to surprise visitors with culinary delights. Maastricht is truly the culinary capital of the Netherlands. Around every corner, you’ll find a cozy brown café or a Michelin-starred restaurant. For example, Café Sjiek serves local specialties like ‘zuurvlees,’ while restaurants such as Beluga and Tout à Fait offer top-level creations. Several restaurants proudly hold Michelin stars — definitely worth a detour.
