Dreamy Drau

This cycling route ranks high among Austria’s most beautiful bike paths. Mainly flat to gently hilly (so easy to ride) and wide enough to cycle side by side — perfect for a relaxed journey. Equally important: it’s almost car-free. You follow the dreamy Drau River, starting in Sillian. Along the way, you pass charming villages like Strassen, Thal, and Abfeltersbach. Take a moment to visit their churches, remarkable for their architecture and frescoes.

Enjoy every day

After a long, gently descending stretch, Spittal appears with its impressive Schloss Porcia. Then continue along the Drau to the spa town of Villach. In the evening, indulge in Carinthian specialties like cheese noodles, farmer’s bacon, and fresh fish from the Drau. Then onward, as Mühlbach and Seelach by the Klopeiner See await. Finish with a last loop to the hilltop town of Völkermarkt, known for its beautiful historic old town. Well, even the best dreams must come to an end.

Medieval Völkermarkt

The small town of Völkermarkt is nestled among mountains, rivers, and lakes. This idyllic setting is home to a charming town that received its very own fortress over six hundred years ago. In fact, the region is dotted with many castles and forts. Today, the impressive fortress houses a museum and the town hall. Throughout the narrow streets and alleys leading to the Hauptplatz, the medieval street layout is still clearly visible, despite the town having been destroyed by fire in 1400.

Most Beautiful Palace

Have you ever heard of Gabriel von Salamanca? After your visit to Spittal an der Drau, you’ll know all about him. In 1533, he initiated the construction of Schloss Porcia. The building process took over sixty years, but the result was worth the wait. The palace was voted the most beautiful Renaissance building north of the Alps. This is thanks to its three-story-high arcades, rich stucco work, and the castle’s exquisite relief furnishings. It’s no wonder many royals wanted to stay here. In 1951, the municipality of Spittal became the owner, allowing you to visit today. Come and judge for yourself if it deserves this title.

  • Return night train Lienz: we can tailor and book the night train for you.
  • At the end of the tour, you can reserve a return transfer by bus from Seelach to Sillian, where your car is parked. You will stay another night in Sillian. If you arrive by train, it is best to reserve a return transfer to Villach, where you stay one more night before departing by train the next day. Return transfers must be booked in advance with Happy Cycling Holidays and cannot be arranged on site.
