Like music to my ears!

With its many churches, monasteries, squares and palaces, musical Salzburg sets the tone for this journey. Starting off, you'll be exploring the city of Mozart and Maria. The first was born at Getreidegasse 9, now a museum. The second can not only be found in the many churches, but also represents the Von Trapp family who used to live here and served as the model for the famous Sound of Music. In the beautiful Mirabellgarten, Julie Andrews as Maria, together with the seven Von Trapp children, sang - do, re mi - down the baroque stairs.

Sing your heart out

While cycling towards Villach you'll sing your heart out. About the ancient Celt town of Hallein, about the world's largest ice cave, the Eisriesenwelt, about the Liechtensteinklamm, one of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps, or about the formidable Gasteiner Ache waterfall in the mountain town of Bad Gastein. In the days that follow, so - do, re mi - the hymn continues. For Spittal an der Drau with its Renaissance castle Porcia and for the small, old spa town of Villach and its southern charm.

Mozartkugeln

Around 1900 in Salzburg, at Getreidegasse 3, near Schatz Konditorei, the Mozartkugel was born: a round chocolate bonbon filled with nougat, pistachio and marzipan. A tribute to the prodigy who had been playing the piano from the age of three, started the violin only a year later, composed his first piece of music when he was five, and had several operas to his name by the age of twelve.

Gorgeous gazebo

The Hellbrunner Allee in Salzburg takes you 2.5km straight to Schloss Hellbrunn. A quiet oasis along centuries-old oaks, chestnuts, beeches and poplars. At the entrance of the castle however, the quiet is nowhere to be found. This is where the gazebo used in The Sound of Music is located. Its original location was at Schloss Leopoldskron, but since too many fans entered the garden uninvited, they decided to move it. Now, almost sixty years later, the movie still appears to attract hordes of fans, pilgrims almost, to Salzburg.

Only in the freezing cold

Close to the town of Werfen in Salzburgerland lies the largest ice cave in the world: the Eisriesenwelt. A big part has been opened to visitors. Take a guided walk through the cave and admire the beautiful ice sculptures and frozen lakes and tunnels. Don't forget to have a look around when making your way to the cave. The view of the surrounding mountains is phenomenal.

The Baroque city of Villach

In Villach, be sure to visit the historic centre where you'll find beautiful pastel-colored Baroque houses around the Hauptplatz. The names of the narrow alleys refer to earlier trades, such as tanners and sail makers, and the old pillory on the square proves that things were not always smooth sailing before. A visit to the Gothic St. Jacob's Church with its 95-meter-high tower is also highly recommended while in Villach. Once you reach the top, you'll have a fantastic view of the city and the surrounding Alps.
