Sailing Holidays Are Something Truly Special

With wind and salt on your skin and a feeling of endless freedom—like a modern explorer discovering new seas and distant shores. On board the beautifully equipped sailing ships Mare fan Fryslân, Simmer fan Fryslân, Wapen fan Fryslân, or Leafde fan Fryslân, you experience nature up close, surrounded by the elements of water, wind, and sun.

UNESCO World Heritage

The open waters of the northern IJsselmeer and the unique biosphere reserve of the western Wadden Sea—part of the UNESCO World Heritage list—promise an unforgettable journey. Highlights of this tour include cycling on the North Sea islands of Texel and Terschelling, where you explore endless beaches, dunes, small forests, and charming villages. On the mainland in the provinces of North Holland and Friesland, you’ll discover peaceful countryside, small towns, and picturesque fishing villages—a true paradise for cyclists. The combination of sailing and cycling makes this journey a truly unique experience.

Join In or Simply Relax – The Choice Is Yours

If you’d like to be active, you are welcome to help the crew with sailing, navigation, or hoisting the sails under their guidance—no sailing experience is required. Of course, you can also simply relax and enjoy the sailing and the scenery from a comfortable spot on deck. Because these are large, sturdy ships (up to 55 metres long) and the waters are usually calm, the risk of seasickness is generally very low. If you prefer to be cautious, we recommend bringing standard travel-sickness medication.

The Ship Is Your Floating Hotel

Alongside the cycling tours, you travel part of the route by ship, which sails to a new destination each day. You stay overnight on board, and both dinner and breakfast are served on the ship. You can also take a packed lunch with you and usually choose between a longer or a shorter cycling route. If you prefer not to cycle on a certain day, you are welcome to stay on board and travel to the next harbour by ship. Rental bikes are available on board, but you can also bring your own bicycle if you wish.

Perfect for Experienced Cyclists

You will receive a detailed cycling map, and we will suggest a recommended route. Ultimately, you decide which route to take and at what pace you would like to explore the surroundings. Each evening, there is a briefing where the crew explains the route for the next day and offers helpful tips. While you are out cycling, you can reach the ship by phone at any time in case of emergency, and the crew will assist you in solving any problem.

  • About the Ships: please remember that the ship is both your hotel and a working vessel that must be operated and maintained day and night. Some operational noise is therefore unavoidable.
  • Important Notes About Sail & Bike Tours: a Sail & Bike tour always includes a small element of adventure. On this trip, only the embarkation and disembarkation port of Enkhuizen is fixed in advance. The exact route depends mainly on the weather and is planned day by day. Changes to the route or the order of stages may therefore occur. The skipper and crew will discuss the options with guests each day and will do everything possible to offer you a varied, memorable, and active week full of culture and nature. Let yourself be pleasantly surprised!

The Ship

The impressive four-masted schooner Leafde fan Fryslân made her maiden voyage in 2018. The interior of this recently restyled ship can be described as modern-traditional. On the lower deck, there are 12 well-equipped twin cabins, one smaller twin cabin, one junior suite with two separate beds, and two single cabins. In two twin cabins, a third bed (bunk bed) can be added, making the ship suitable for families. On the upper deck, there are four magnificent suites with hotel-style beds, double sliding glass doors, and small private balconies. Delicious meals are served in the restaurant, and the well-stocked bar makes the lounge an ideal place to relax after a day of cycling. And if you still have energy left, you are welcome to roll up your sleeves on deck and help the crew with the sailing.
