Enschede - 3 Days

A - Textile route to Gronau - 36 kmEnschede was once the second textile city in the world after Manchester. That is why this cycle route takes you past industrial heritage from the textile past. First you cycle through the Roombeek district where there were once countless textile factories. You then leave Enschede and cycle along rural roads via Lonneker to Losser and then cross the Dinkel. On the German side of this border river you cycle into Gronau. Here too, textile manufacturers from Enschede have left their mark on the development of the city. B - Parks and garden villages - 35 or 48 kmToday's route places more emphasis on the design of the cities. You cycle through the Rigtersbleek district, the G.J. from Heek and Ledeboerpark to the only campus university in the Netherlands, the University of Twente. Then you descend to the Grolsch Veste, to cycle there via the F35, a real cycle highway, to the garden village of Lansink in Hengelo. On the other side of the Twentekanaal you cycle again via the Boekelose Stoomblekerij to Enschede, where you cycle another round through garden village Pathmos.
After garden village Lansink you can make an extra loop, in which you cycle through the vast estate Twickel (with castle garden, orangery and museum farm) to the watermill in Oele.
C - Along the manufacturers' outdoor areas - 53 kmIn the first part of this route you cycle through 'Blijdensteinland'. Via Roombeek you leave the city and you arrive in Lonneker. From there you cycle successively over the Lonnekerberg and through the Haagse Bos and Het Snippert. All estates that were once owned by the Enschede textile manufacturer A.J. Blijdenstein acquired and forested. Then you cycle to the Arboretum at De Lutte, where the name Gelderman comes into play. This Oldenzaal textile manufacturer instructed Leonard Springer to construct a tree garden here. On the way to his former factory complex in Oldenzaal you will pass beautifully situated country estates. You will cycle back to Enschede over the vast terrain of the former Twente airbase.City walk - 9 kmThe walk starts at the last remnant of the Van Heek Spinnerij. Afterwards you walk through the center to the 'Stadsweide', where there are still a few manufacturer villas. After the Volkspark you walk along the famous 'Schuttersveld wall' to the G..J. from Heekpark. From there you walk along the Roombeek to the district of the same name. You walk back to your hotel via the 'culture mile' and the 'Boerenkerkhof'.
