Wind at your back: along the Swedish west coast

Sweden introduced its first signposted cycling route, the Kattegattleden, which was immediately named European Cycling Route of the Year 2018. A simple but successful formula: you cycle along Sweden’s west coast, from southern Helsingborg to the more northern Göteborg, usually with a pleasant tailwind.

Varied cycling

The route takes you on excellent bike paths, through nature reserves and past impressive cliffs, idyllic fishing harbors, vast beaches, and endless sea views. After Helsingborg, the charming town of Ängelholm appears. Then you pass Båstad, Skottorp Castle, more sand dunes and beaches, and the atmospheric Laholm with its narrow cobblestone streets. You finish in Särö, once a favorite destination of royal families and high society, and conclude the trip in vibrant Göteborg.

Most charming city

The vibrant city of Gothenburg is often called the most charming city in Sweden. And indeed, it offers delightful shops, beautiful parks and canals, cozy terraces, and a stunning archipelago. Be sure to visit Haga, the oldest district in Gothenburg. Especially Haga Nygata, a charming street full of cozy boutiques and coffee spots. For art lovers, the Gothenburg Museum of Art is a must, showcasing masterpieces by Rembrandt, Picasso, and van Gogh alongside a great collection of contemporary art.

Right spot for fish

Extend your holiday by one or two days to explore the lively city of Gothenburg in more detail. In the charming city center, you'll find many restaurants and cafés, the covered market Saluhallen, and… the Feskekörka fish market — the perfect place if you love fish.

Old Helsingborg

Alongside much innovation, Helsingborg also proudly showcases a rich historical past. Strolling through the charming streets of the old town, you’ll encounter the medieval Kärnan Tower, the only remaining part of Helsingborg’s 15th-century castle. Across the Sound stands the historic Kronborg Fortress. You can climb the Kärnan Tower for a spectacular view of the city and the sea. Also worth a visit are Mariakyrkan (St. Mary’s Church) and the neo-Gothic town hall with its decorative façade.
