Bienvenido

Welcome to Spain’s land of leisure. The region is famous for its robust wines and honest cuisine. But it’s not just about taste—the scenery is stunning too. Picture a patchwork of rolling fields, gentle wine hills, and rosy-hued rocks. A hint of Tuscany, but unmistakably Spanish. You’ll discover this on the 7-day trek starting from the capital, Logroño. Soon you’ll arrive at Rioja’s gem: Laguardia. Behind its high fortress walls lies a medieval town center. The chimes at Plaza Mayor greet you warmly, and the church boasts a wooden portal with fourteen apostles—perfectly in tune with the pilgrims you meet along the way.

Cradle of the Spanish Language

Of course, vineyards abound, along with plenty of chances to sample wines and tapas. Following quiet country roads, you’ll reach 11th-century Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Then, an easy ride takes you to San Millán de la Cogolla, the cradle of the Spanish language. Here in the 11th century, the first Catalan words were recorded. If you have time, visit the monastery of Yuso. Back in Logroño, light a candle in the cathedral—for a good harvest this year.

Golden Jewel

The grand monastery complex of Yuso rests quietly and beautifully at the foot of a hill. Inside, it’s a true gem. The sacristy gleams with gold leaf, and the treasury is just as impressive. It houses ivory miniatures that could fill an entire comic book about the Middle Ages. The monastery is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Swiss Cheese of Wine Cellars

Walking through the ancient streets of Laguardia, you hardly realize that beneath the houses lies a vast network of wine cellars, like a giant Swiss cheese. The town was founded in the 10th century as a defensive post and originally belonged to the Kingdom of Navarra. With the arrival of the Catholic Monarchs, this Spanish beauty lost its defensive role and flourished thanks to the wine trade. The cellars beneath the town still contain remnants of settlements from the Iron Age.
