Alicante Via Verdes

The old railway routes in and around Alicante are cyclist-friendly: the Vías Verdes, or greenways. They feature virtually no steep inclines, making them ideal cycling paths. At the same time, the landscape is shaped by rolling hills, with towns and villages of whitewashed houses perched on their peaks. The varied routes lead through pine forests, fields of lavender and sunflowers, past small Arab mountain villages, and wind through the mountains back to the coast. » read more about Alicante Via Verdes

Fiesta every day

Dazzling beaches, wonderfully rideable Vías Verdes, charming mountain villages, and breathtaking lavender fields — the Spanish Costa around Alicante has it all. And wherever you go, it always feels like a celebration. Even in the local café where you pause before your next cycling day for a café solo — or... con leche. After your flight to Alicante, a transfer takes you to the picturesque inland town of Castalla. Then comes a short ride through the Carrascal de la Font Roja Natural Park before your journey truly begins — to Cocentaina. In the Arab mountain villages, time visibly stands still — truly special.

Cycling, Sailing, and Trains

En route to Villalonga, you ride along a former railway line that winds like a snake through the mountains towards the Mediterranean Sea. Then it’s a relaxing descent to the harbor town of Denia, with its lively terraces and markets. The next day, you cycle through the spectacular Montgó Natural Park. In summer, you can combine the ride with a boat trip along the dramatic cliff coast. On your final fiesta — oops, cycling — day, you take the train twice, with a scenic route in between from Benidorm to Villajoyosa. And then? A refreshing cerveza to close out this Spanish fiesta.

Feast Your Eyes

The Carrascal de la Font Roja Natural Park has been one of the best-preserved nature reserves in the Valencia region for over thirty years. The protected area covers around 2,298 hectares and includes the mountain ranges of El Alto de San Antonio. Thanks to its unique location, it’s an ideal habitat for rare flora and fauna — as well as wildcats, weasels, badgers, wild boars, eagles, owls, peregrine falcons, and hawks. So keep your eyes open — both on the ground and in the sky.

A Piece of Cake

After Valencia, Alicante is the largest city on the Costa Blanca—and definitely one worth staying longer for. Visit the Castillo de Santa Bárbara with its phenomenal city views, stroll along the Explanada de España with its many palm trees, market stalls, and refreshing sea breeze, wander through the authentic Barrio Santa Cruz neighborhood, cycle along the extensive beach (and pause at a cozy terrace along the way), marvel at the yachts in the Puerto Deportivo, and finally, visit MACA, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante. Enjoying your extended stay here is truly a piece of cake.

Routes

The old railway routes in Alicante are easy and highly accessible for cyclists, hikers, horseback riders—or even those on donkeys: the Vías Verdes, the greenways. With virtually no steep climbs, they make for ideal cycling paths. Rolling hills, some rising above 1000 meters, dominate the landscape. At the summits lie towns and villages built from whitewashed houses. In the authentic town of Castalla, the journey begins at the charming guesthouse run by our Dutch local partner. The varied routes pass through pine forests, fields of lavender and sunflowers, and weave past small Arab mountain villages, winding their way through the mountains. From there, the trail leads through the Gallinera valley, past vineyards and orange groves, heading toward the coast near Denia, Javea, and Altea.
