Slowly in Umbria

Eating pasta by twirling your fork in a spoon? In Umbria — well, actually all over Italy — that’s not how it’s done. You catch a few strands with your fork and twist them against the side of a deep plate. No spoon needed. You’ll learn that quickly during your journey through central Italy. But you’ll also discover that urbanization has largely passed Umbria by. Wonderful!

Taking it easy

Here, the wine and olive farmers set the daily pace. Delightful! So take it slow; there’s plenty of time to explore those vast vineyards, slender cypresses, and tranquil villages. Assisi, Spoleto, Torgiano, and Perugia bask in a soft, warm, enchanting light. Just the sight alone will make you slow down a gear. From Assisi, you travel to Torgiano and Perugia, with their medieval squares and alleyways, Renaissance palaces, churches, museums, and charming shopping streets. Then come Passignano, Umbertide, and Gubbio. And in the evening? Enjoy your pasta—just with a fork.

A Kiss from Perugia

With a chocolate hotel, a chocolate museum, and a chocolate festival, Perugia is a paradise for chocoholics. The city’s addiction is largely thanks to the Baci. These chocolate “kisses,” wrapped with a love note, are a true icon. During the annual Eurochocolate festival, you can enjoy tastings, ride the chocolate tram, and relax in the chocolate spa. Not in town that month? Then head to Sandri, one of the city’s oldest chocolate shops, for a coffee and a slice of chocolate cake. Address: Corso Pietro Vannucci 32.

Best View

Visit Gubbio and you’ll notice something right away: it’s pleasantly quiet, even in high season. Perfect for exploring the walled town at your own pace. Built on the slopes of Monte Ingino, the houses, churches, and monuments seem to cling to the mountain. The narrow streets in the center are quite steep. Many of these slopes lead to Piazza Grande (there are also elevators in town). From the square, you get the best view of the Umbrian hills and the impressive Palazzo dei Consoli, built between 1332 and 1338. The unique tower features a two-thousand-kilogram bell that you ring with your feet. But you can always leave that to someone else.
