Picobello Piedmont

Just when you thought it couldn’t get more Italian than sipping wine and eating pasta on a quiet square in Tuscany, along comes Piedmont. At its heart lies Saluzzo, where you stay in the medieval centre. From here, you’ll explore the Po Plain, vast orchards, and medieval towns like the castle village of Costigliole Saluzzo.

Dreamy Towns

Along the way, church bells from other dreamy towns with evocative names like Cavour, Barge, Revello, Savigliano, and Cartigano lure you into their narrow, winding streets. “Wow, such a big church for such a small town.” But of course—Italians love grand gestures. And they love to enjoy life at a relaxed pace. On the day rides through the green countryside, it starts with a frothy cappuccino. Then onward, because the bizarre rock formations of the I Ciciu del Villar nature park and the 12th-century Romanesque Cistercian abbey complex Abbazia di Staffarda are still waiting to be discovered. And of course, the stately city of Turin too.

A Leap Back in Time in Saluzzo

In the series Outlander, you need to wrestle with a stone to travel centuries back in time—but in Saluzzo, it’s much easier. One step through the medieval gate and you’re instantly in the age of knights. This is how it looked back then: a labyrinth of tiny streets lined with colorful houses and terracotta roofs, some leaning more than others. While the old buildings are now being restored with public funding, it’s the peeling paint and missing plaster that truly evoke the charm of a bygone era. Highlights include the double city walls, the stately castle, and the Chiesa San Giovanni. In the choir of this church lies the burial chapel of the Marquises of Saluzzo.

A Café Fit for a Palace

One of the most beautiful squares in Europe is Piazza San Carlo in Turin. It's lined with Baroque buildings and arcades dating back to the mid-17th century. The city boasts 18 kilometers of these arcades, originally built for the royal House of Savoy so they could take their daily walks without getting wet. You'll also find two of the city's most historic cafés here: Caffè Torino and Caffè Mokita. With chandeliers, velvet benches, mirrors, stucco, and gold leaf, the former looks more like a palace than a bar—yet it remains affordable for everyone.
