Feeling at Home in Piemonte

Have you heard of Giovanni Gerbi, Costante Girardengo, and Fausto Coppi? These are cycling legends from Piemonte who made history as champions. It’s no wonder the world on two wheels feels at home in northern Piemonte, especially in the province of Cuneo. As you cycle, you’ll discover a region rich in green hills with vast vineyards, impressive castles, and centuries-old towns and villages.

Along Many Highlights

The towns of Busca, Castiglione, and Manta, with their castles and churches, form a beautiful prelude to your first destination, Saluzzo. Afterward, take a rest day or enjoy a round trip to Revello. Through the ancient towns of Savigliano and Fossano, you cycle to Mondovì, which also boasts a stunning upper town you can explore on a morning walk. Then you leave the plains behind and ride into the green and refreshing Valle Pesio. Via the provincial capital Cuneo, you continue to Valle Stura. The penultimate cycling day is a climbing day. After an overnight stay at altitude, you then descend back to the plains.

Leap Back in Time in Saluzzo

While in the series Outlander you have to struggle through a stone to travel centuries back, in Saluzzo it’s much easier. You simply ‘jump’ under the medieval city gate into the historic center and instantly find yourself in the age of knights. This is how it looked back then: a labyrinth of tiny streets with colorful houses and terracotta roofs. Some leaning more than others. Although the old buildings are now being restored with subsidies, it is precisely the peeling paint and missing plaster on the façades that contribute to the authentic historic atmosphere. Highlights include the double city walls, the stately castle, and the Chiesa San Giovanni. In the choir of this church, you will find the burial chapel of the Marquises of Saluzzo.

Majestic Cuneo

Perched high on a plateau, the capital of the province of the same name rises above the plains. The baroque square and the shopping streets with their long arcades emphasize the monumental character of Cuneo. The medieval center is beautifully restored and features authentic shops. You can still experience 19th-century traditions here that have disappeared elsewhere, such as liveried waiters who serve cappuccinos or the typical Cuneesi al rhum (chocolate pralines with a splash of rum) with flair.
