Mamma Mia… what an atmosphere

Boinggg. The heavy bells of Santa Maria echo across the square. The church seems far too large for such a small town. But hey, Italians love grand gestures — and stylish dining. It starts early in the day on a lively terrace. Cappuccino on the table, cycling map in hand, and deciding which highlight of the Piedmont region to explore next on this hub-based cycling holiday.

Steeped in history

Your daily starting point is the ancient town of Costigliole Saluzzo, home to three imposing castles. The medieval towns of Saluzzo, Fossano, and Savigliano overflow with historical charm. The six circular tours also take you to Dronero, Cartignano, elegant Cuneo, and the lush Varaita Valley. Back in Costigliole Saluzzo, you’ll return to Castello Rosso (the Red Castle), your charming hotel base. There’s no better setting for a delightful dinner in the evening. Mamma Mia, how delicious!

Elegant Cuneo

The baroque square and shopping streets with their long arcades highlight the stately character of Cuneo. The beautifully restored medieval center is full of authentic shops. Here, you’ll still find 19th-century traditions long vanished elsewhere—like waiters in livery serving cappuccinos and the typical Cuneesi al rhum (chocolate pralines with a hint of rum) with flair. After your coffee, be sure to visit the Basilica of San Francesco (circa 1400), the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Bosco, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli. At the Museo Casa Galimberti, on the second floor of Palazzo Osasco, you can explore the possessions of the Galimberti family.

A Leap Back in Time in Saluzzo

While in the series Outlander you have to wrestle through a stone to travel centuries back, in Saluzzo it’s much easier. Step through the medieval gateway and you instantly enter the historic center, stepping straight into the age of knights. This is how it looked back then: a labyrinth of tiny streets lined with colorful houses and terracotta roofs—each one leaning just a little differently. Subsidies are helping to restore the old buildings, but it’s precisely the peeling paint and missing plaster on the facades that add to that authentic historic charm. Highlights include the double city walls, the stately castle, and the Chiesa San Giovanni. Inside the church’s choir, you’ll find the burial chapel of the Marquises of Saluzzo.
