Hanseatic Cities

“Fresh fish…” These days, the IJssel quays exude a relaxed atmosphere. But centuries ago, it was a different story. Merchants and marketgoers bustled about as traders shouted prices for fish, grain, salt, and timber. In the Middle Ages, cities like Kampen, Zwolle, and Hasselt stood shoulder to shoulder with Hamburg and Bruges. They were part of the powerful Hanseatic League, and the wealth it brought is still visible today.

Always Along the Water

From your base in Zwolle, you’ll visit Kampen. On other days, you cycle along the IJssel to Hattem, follow the Vecht to Dalfsen, and ride along the Zwarte Water to Hasselt and Zwartsluis. A short ferry ride now and then brings you to more charming canals and stepped-gable houses. Another highlight: after visiting Hattem, cross the IJssel to reach the Duursche Waarden, a stunning nature reserve shaped by ancient watercourses.

Cow on the Tower

In the Middle Ages, Kampen was doing so well that it built no fewer than twenty city gates. Only three remain today, but thankfully many of the old merchants' houses were preserved. A quirky feature is the church tower on the Koeplein. When construction stalled, grass began to grow on the walkway around the tower. “Hoist a cow up and let it graze!” a farmer supposedly suggested. And so they did. The poor animal was lifted up with a rope around its neck but suffocated halfway. In humorous memory, a fake cow now hangs from the tower every summer.

Romantic Hattem

No winter feels complete without the illustrations of Anton Pieck. You’ll find them in the romantic—and almost timeless—fortified town of Hattem, known for having the thickest city walls in the Netherlands. The former castle "De Dikke Tinne" had walls up to seven meters thick. Today, only decorative paving stones mark where it once stood. Relive the romance of the past at the Anton Pieck Museum (Noordwal 31), where the 19th century served as a major source of inspiration for the artist.

Dynamic Zwolle

Zwolle is a medieval city bursting with modern energy—thanks to its creative students, innovative entrepreneurs, and independent thinkers. Visit the bookstore housed in an immense church and admire the stunning Sassenpoort gate. The most striking attraction is Museum de Fundatie, known for its almost otherworldly appearance; the elliptical extension of the museum is affectionately called “the Zeppelin.”
