Wandering Through History

It’s as delightful as Deventer koek, to be precise. History enthusiasts will feel right at home in Deventer. The city breathes Hanseatic heritage and is one of the oldest in the country. Cycling through its streets, you discover a historic center that still preserves an authentic medieval street pattern. Wandering the intimate lanes, you can almost hear the calls of merchants, clucking chickens, and the rumble of handcarts.

Journeys from the Orphanage

The same goes for your base in Zutphen. This former Hanseatic city features a beautiful medieval center, with your hotel located opposite the 11th-century Walburg Church. The hotel itself is made up of several buildings, including a stately original 17th-century orphanage. In the evening, you can easily stroll into the city center. During this holiday, you’ll also visit Lochem, cycle to the Loenermark—a vast rolling heathland dotted with sheep and Scottish Highland cattle—and follow the famous Vorden castle route. You’ll pass through the tiny village of Bronkhorst and also visit the Hanseatic city of Doesburg.

And that’s nine!

Keep count—one of the circuits takes you past nine castles, manor houses, and estates, making this route wonderfully varied. Huis de Voorst is often called the Versailles of the Achterhoek. Den Bramel, dating from 1725, is said to be haunted—but luckily you’ll pass by during the day. The route also includes Castle Ruurlo and, around Vorden, the castles and country houses Wildenborch, De Wiersse, Vorden, and Hackfort.

A Nice Gift

Castle Vorden, located at the edge of the forest just outside the village of Vorden, was first mentioned in a deed of sale from 1315. Steven van Vorden gifted the estate, along with all its outbuildings, to his uncle Dirk. Not a bad present at all. The castle looked quite different back then. The square tower was originally part of a medieval structure. That tower and the drawbridge still remind visitors of its defensive purpose—quite different from the more flamboyant Hackfort, located on the other side of Vorden.

Chained Up

Wandering through the intimate streets of Zutphen, you can hear the calls of merchants, clucking chickens, and the rumble of handcarts. This vivid image easily comes to mind in the former Hanseatic city with its beautiful historic center. Be sure to visit the 11th-century Walburg Church. Since 1561, the church has also housed the Librije, a library containing 750 old books chained to the reading desks to prevent theft—even back then. Only the Italian city of Cesena and the British city of Hereford still have such chained libraries.

Deventer koek

In Deventer, you’re all set—at least if you love cake. Deventer koek is inseparably linked to the Hanseatic city. The Deventer Koekwinkel at Brink 84 also sells delicious fudge, nougat, and chocolates. At Vrienden van Vroeger (Grote Kerkhof 23), you can experience the famous Deventer koek in a whole new way. Using the renowned cake as a base, they created the Deventer Koek Taart—with the iconic Lebuinus Tower featured as the icing on the cake.
