You won’t see it, but you’ll definitely hear it — a foghorn-like call rising from the reeds: the deep, low sound of the bittern. As you cycle along the reed-lined shores of the watery region of the Fluessen, this booming bird remains well hidden. Push Moraines in Gaasterland

Wait, is this really Friesland? The cycling route to Hindeloopen and Stavoren also takes you through Gaasterland — a rolling landscape of ancient forests, manor houses, and actual coastal cliffs. This is not the Friesland you thought you knew. Here, forest and meadow meet, as do land and water, creating a landscape that is both open and sheltered. Perfect for varied and scenic cycling. Unlike the man-made mounds known as terps, the hills here are natural. Thousands of years ago, glacial ice from Scandinavia slowly pushed the land forward, at a rate of several hundred meters per year — forming a striking push moraine landscape.

A Feast for the Senses

The Fluessen is a paradise for waterbirds. Spoonbills forage along the shores while geese and shelducks paddle to and fro. Meadow birds like lapwings, godwits, oystercatchers, and redshanks also thrive in the wet, low-lying grasslands. It’s a symphony of chirping and quacking on and around the waters of this vast lake. In summer, the hay meadows burst into color with herbs and blooming grasses. Ever heard of striped cock’s-foot, common knapweed, or ragged robin? Together, they create a vibrant tapestry. A cycling area to truly whet your appetite.
